BT volunteer wins £500 for Gorseinon Cricket Club

BT has rewarded Gorseinon Cricket Club with a grant of £500 to help increase the number of members to its junior section.

The grant has been awarded through the company’s employee recognition scheme, the BT People Awards. The scheme recognises and rewards BT’s volunteering heroes, who offer their time and skills to help people in their local communities, by providing grants to organisations in which they are involved.

Gorseinon Cricket Club beat off national competition to win the BT Sport People category of the awards for the contribution it makes to the local community.

BT Field Support Manager, Robert Morgan began volunteering for Gorseinon Cricket Club 20 years ago when his father was the groundsman. As the current chairman, treasurer and coach of the under 9's team, Robert nominated Gorseinon Cricket Club for the BT People Award. He said: “We have had a lot of interest from children who want to participate in organised junior cricket.”

“ This award will help us meet this demand as we’ll now be able to increase the number of coaches for our junior section and invest in additional match day and training equipment such as cones, balls, bats and pads.”

Four groups in Wales have received grants to help them continue their excellent work in the community. They include the Cardiff Rivers Group and Gorseinon Cricket Club. A detailed list of the winning groups is below.

Ann Beynon, BT’s director for Wales, said: “The People Awards acknowledges the time and commitment that BT people across Wales are giving to the local community groups for which they volunteer.”

Four hundred and fifty one applications were received for this round of grants and 84 applicants received awards totalling £50,980.

Applications were submitted by BT people from all over the world including Peru, India and Belgium. These included a wide range of community organisations from football clubs to police cadets to red squirrel protection, illustrating the wide variety of activities in which BT people are involved.
