Summary
BT Cymru / Wales is the first private sector organisation to sign up for ‘Work Welsh’, a new learning programme to strengthen Welsh language skills in the workplace, devised by the National Centre for Learning Welsh.

BT Cymru / Wales is the first private sector organisation to sign up for ‘Work Welsh’, a new learning programme to strengthen Welsh language skills in the workplace, devised by the National Centre for Learning Welsh.

Up to 300 employees based at BT offices in Cardiff and Swansea are expected to follow the ‘Work Welsh’ programme, which has been tailored for BT and is fully-funded.

A range of workplace-based courses, as well as a 10-hour introductory online course, are included in the programme. The courses are suitable for learners at all levels, whether beginners or more experienced Welsh speakers.

Additional support includes training for workplace mentors, information sessions on the Welsh language and monthly support visits. An awards ceremony will be held at BT offices in March 2018 to celebrate employees’ achievements.

Alwen Williams, director for BT Cymru Wales, says:

“BT has a significant presence in Wales and we’re delighted to be the first major private sector employer to work with the National Centre for Learning Welsh on this new Welsh language programme.

“The programme will support employees’ professional development and give them the confidence to use Welsh both in our workplaces and beyond.”

Dan Hawkes, who works as a manager in BT consumer at BT Tower in Swansea, is following one of the ‘Work Welsh’ courses. Dan said:

“Signing up to learn Welsh is something I’ve always wanted to do. A lot of my friends speak it as well as their children and even though I know the odd word, I’ve always wanted to be able to converse with them.

“Eventually I’d love to be fluent and anyone wanting to take the daunting step towards learning something new should just throw themselves in and give it a go - you’ll be surprised how much you already know. Friends and colleagues are always willing to help out and I’m delighted that BT are giving this opportunity to employees.”
