Superfast Speeds come to Royal Welsh Showground

The Royal Welsh is speeding ahead with superfast internet available on the showground for the first time this year, thanks to the Superfast Cymru programme.

Connecting the popular Llanelwedd showground with a fibre broadband cabinet is one of the programme’s latest installations.

The cabinet delivering superfast speeds to exhibitors and visitors alike will be unveiled on the first day of the show.

Benefits will include providing free WiFi hotspots on the showground which will help ease the congestion of the mobile phone signal during the very busy week. Visitors will also be able to use the hotspots to check the Royal Welsh Show’s new app which will provide all the latest information.

Deputy Minister for Skills and Technology Ken Skates said: “It’s great news that Superfast Cymru has delivered superfast broadband to the showground, demonstrating how Wales is becoming a digital nation.

“Superfast Cymru is an ambitious programme, providing fast fibre broadband to areas which otherwise would not benefit from this resource which is increasingly important for all of us, especially businesses including farming.”

Deputy Minister for Agriculture and Fisheries Rebecca Evans said: “The success of the first year of the new online payments system for farmers in Wales, with nearly a third submitting their applications electronically, shows how more and more businesses are operating digitally.

"The Superfast Cymru programme delivers the fast and reliable internet speeds that will encourage further take up of online services.

“The Welsh Government has invested £7.9m to establish a new and modern online payments system. This is because we want to simplify and improve the payment application process and ensure that farmers in Wales are fully on board with Wales’ transformation into a digital nation.”

Ann Beynon, BT Director Wales, said: "The Royal Welsh is one of the most prestigious events of its type in Europe and I'm delighted that we've been able to install superfast fibre broadband to this venue for the first time as part of the Superfast Cymru programme.

" High speed access to the internet is an important part of everyday life and providing this capability at the shop window for farming in Wales is great news for an important sector in our country.

" We're really looking forward to continuing to deliver high speed broadband across Wales over the next couple of years".

" I'm also delighted that we're delivering this on time thanks to the dedication of hundreds of BT engineers working incredibly hard on what is an enormous project."

“Having superfast broadband installed at the showground is very exciting and as a local person, I am really pleased that this upgrade will benefit the Society, our visitors and the local area.” says Steve Hughson, Chief Executive of the Royal Welsh Agricultural Society.

“Ensuring businesses and homes in mid Wales have access to new technology advances is essential to keeping our local economy buoyant and our communities alive.”

Superfast Cymru, a partnership between the Welsh Government and BT, is an ambitious programme bringing fast fibre broadband to areas not covered by commercial roll-out, and which otherwise would not receive it. It aims to reach, when combined with commercial funded roll-outs, 96 per cent of properties in Wales by the end of Spring 2016, meaning that fibre based broadband will become available to more people more quickly than the rest of the UK.
