Discovery to bring together the best of BT Sport and Eurosport under one roof: TNT Sports is the new name that will replace BT Sport, from July 2023.

It marks the next logical step for BT Sport as well as the broader transformation of BT's Consumer business. Once launched, it'll become a hugely exciting new premium sports offering for customers. And, as chair of our Joint Venture with Warner Bros. Discovery, I'm pleased with the progress we’re making.

I'm also really proud of our teams who have been working at pace to create a more efficient platform that'll see this new sports brand in the UK and Ireland brought to life for the first time before the start of 2023/24 football season. In just a few months, they have done an amazing job under the leadership of Andrew Georgiou (board member of the Joint Venture and President and Managing Director, Warner Bros. Discovery Sports Europe), responding to some really significant changes.

We've maintained what is a premium viewing experience for millions of customers, despite a period of transition after we completed the transaction to combine the assets of BT Sport and Eurosport UK last September. And we've given customers more, just like we promised, with BT Sport customers able to activate a discovery+ Entertainment & Sport subscription at no extra cost earlier this month.

What can our viewers expect?

Shortly before the 2023/24 football season, discovery+ will become the streaming home for sports fans who can enjoy a subscription that includes TNT Sports, Eurosport and entertainment in one destination. BT Sport subscribers already enjoy complimentary access to discovery+ which includes Eurosport’s streaming offer and wide range of entertainment programming.

Together, this provides one of the most extensive line-ups of live sports coverage for fans in the UK and Ireland - including the Olympic Games, the Premier League, UEFA Champions League, UEFA Europa League, Premiership Rugby, MotoGP, UFC, Boxing, WWE, tennis Grand Slams, cycling Grand Tours and the winter sports season.

The TNT Sports name already has a strong association with premium live sport in other territories and under Warner Bros. Discovery’s family of brands. This includes being home to top-level domestic and European football in a number of countries in Latin America, while live sport has been a longtime staple on the TNT network in the U.S, including the NBA, NHL and NCAA.

Our intention with this Joint Venture was always to launch a new brand for amazing live sport and bring it together with an entertainment offering from Warner Bros. Discovery that will ultimately be great for our customers. And it’s thanks to the great content like this that we’re seeing record numbers of people watching, with pretty much all viewing figures up year on year.

Building for the future

From BT Group’s side, building the networks that can sustain that growth is one of the most important things that we can do. Only last Wednesday we saw a record peak for broadband traffic on our network – 29.11Tbps – driven by the streaming of two Champions League games together with Arsenal versus Man City in the Premier League and a new Call of Duty release. That’s more than 10 per cent higher than the previous peak we saw just a few months ago.

The network demand is massive. And that's why it's so important for us to keep investing in our fixed and mobile networks. We’re rolling out our full fibre network at record pace, and we’re committed to delivering 5G coverage on our EE mobile network anywhere in the UK by 2028.

In the meantime, we will continue to work on the integration of our tech platforms with Warner Bros. Discovery, ensuring a seamless experience for customers while getting ready to go big for the start of the new football season.

We are really proud of the progress we've made together, working at pace to create a more efficient platform. There are so many opportunities that this next chapter will bring for both our teams and – most importantly – our viewers on TNT Sports.

Follow me on Twitter and Instagram @marcallera

People blog,Consumer,Sports,TNT,BT Sport,Warner Bros. Meanwhile EE and The FA recently opened two multi-purpose sensory rooms at Wembley Stadium to better accommodate neuro-divergent guests and their families.

For BT Sport, New Signing continues its work to make its broadcasts as accessible as possible for all of its viewers. Over the past two years, BT Sport has broadcast The FA Disability Cup exclusively live with enhanced Audio Description, BSL, and, sub-titles. This season, BT Sport is also increasing the amount of subtitled sports content that it provides viewers by more than 100 hours per month, and, later this season will launch a new series with BSL that focuses on the issues facing deaf and hard of hearing sports fans.

Pete Jeavons, Marketing Communications Director, BT & EE said: “As lead partner of The FA, EE is committed to enhance access to football for everyone. Our New Signing partnership with BT Sport will not only make key BT Sport programming more accessible, but provide a unique opportunity for two BSL experts to develop their careers in sport broadcast.”

Jamie Hindhaugh, Head of BT Sport said: “BT Sport is committed to providing the best possible experience for anyone who loves watching football on TV. We are working hard to make our programming as accessible as possible and we have a range of exciting initiatives planned for the season ahead. It’s fantastic to be able to work with EE to create more BSL content for our viewers.”

England international deaf footballer Will Palmer said: “It’s massive that EE and BT Sport are providing this opportunity for BSL signers to feature so prominently in their football coverage. This will be a big step for the deaf football community and I am really excited to see the New Signing pundits in position over the coming months.

“During the making of the New Signing advert it was a great experience to meet the England senior players and to teach them some BSL words and terms. We look forward to collaborating further with EE and BT Sport to protect, preserve and promote British Sign Language for generations to come."

Amanda Casson Webb, Joint Chief Executive, Royal Association for Deaf (RAD) people, said: “RAD’s vision is a future of opportunity, achievement and equality for deaf people. We are passionate about collaborating with organisations that share our aspiration - and are proud to have partnered BT Sport on ‘New Signing’, a project that we welcome as a real step-change for the Deaf Community. We look forward to seeing more deaf talent and BSL commentary on mainstream TV.”

Teri Devine, Associate Director for Inclusion at RNID, said: “We applaud BT Sport and EE for their ‘New Signing’ initiative. British Sign Language (BSL) is the first language of 87,000 Deaf people in the UK and they have a right to enjoy football games as much as anyone. Representation matters, and we are thrilled that this opportunity will lead to thousands of Deaf football fans being able to watch and engage with the ‘beautiful game’. For support or information, please visit RNID.org.uk.”

ENDS

About BT Sport

Launched in 2013, BT Sport broadcasts in the UK and Republic of Ireland. On a pro forma basis, we continue to expect sustainable revenue growth for FY23 and beyond. All other outlook items unchanged

BT’s historical reported Group financials are unchanged

18 October 2022

On 1 September 2022 BT Group and Warner Bros. Discovery announced completion of their transaction to form a 50:50 joint venture (JV) that combines the assets of BT Sport and Eurosport UK.

By bringing together the sports content offering of both BT Sport and Eurosport UK, the JV will have one of the most extensive portfolios of premium sports. This is an attractive agreement for BT, realising cost efficiencies between BT Sport and Warner Bros. Discovery, and introducing further broadcast rights and expertise from Warner Bros. Discovery, while creating more choice and an even stronger sport and entertainment proposition for our customers. Through the transaction, and with the support and strong partnership of Warner Bros. Discovery, BT Group’s risk exposure to sport has also been significantly reduced while ensuring that BT Group will benefit from the synergies created by the JV. BT plc will receive £93m from Warner Bros. Discovery and up to approximately £540m by way of an earn-out from the JV, subject to certain conditions being met.

BT plc’s interest in the JV will be classified as a JV under IFRS 11, and equity accounted for under IAS 28.

BT Group has today published unaudited historical pro forma financial and operational KPIs to estimate the impact on the group had the JV been in place historically.

Overview of key changes

From 1 September 2022:

Revenue from wholesale contracts, advertising and commercial premises, previously reported in ‘Other’ Consumer revenue, has been transferred to the JV. In addition, BT now acts as an agent of the JV for non-bundled Sport products, for example monthly pass, BT’s app only proposition, and will only recognise its net margin as revenue within Consumer fixed revenue. FY21 and FY22 Group revenue reduced by £0.4bn and £0.5bn respectively on a pro forma basis to reflect both of these revenue allocation changes. Similarly, we continue to expect revenue from this point on to be £0.5bn - £0.6bn per annum lower on a pro forma basis.

Bundled revenue from customers who access BT Sport through BT directly, for example purchased as part of package with broadband or BT TV, will continue to be reported gross within BT Group consolidated financials, with no pro forma adjustments needed.

Production and operational assets of BT Sport have been transferred to Warner Bros. Discovery. As a consequence of the operational assets moving to Warner Bros. Discovery there is a master service agreement whereby the JV is buying all production services from Warner Bros. Discovery. Separately, BT Sport’s sports rights transferred to the JV. As a result, costs associated with sports rights, production and SG&A are no longer reported within BT consolidated financials.

BT Group (through its wholly owned subsidiary British Telecommunications plc (“BT plc”)) and Warner Bros. Discovery have entered into distribution agreements with the JV under which they now distribute the combined sports content to new and existing customers on their respective platforms and apps. BT plc’s distribution agreement with the JV extends beyond 2030, and for the first four years, includes a minimum revenue guarantee of c. £500m per annum, after which payments to the JV will vary depending on customer base. BT plc will receive £93m from Warner Bros. Discovery and up to approximately £540m by way of an earn-out from the JV, subject to certain conditions being met.

BT’s obligation under the minimum revenue guarantee of £2bn over the next four years is higher than the fair value of the related revenue streams, and therefore the delta between our committed expenditure and the value that we currently expect to generate represents a financial liability that will be recorded as a provision on the balance sheet. This liability will unwind over the next 4 years as the £2bn minimum revenue guarantee reduces. The liability will be remeasured at each reporting period in accordance with IFRS 9, with any changes in estimates accounted for prospectively. The liability is included within the profit and loss on disposal calculation which will be booked as a specific item in the Q2 FY23 results.

In constructing the unaudited historical pro forma information, to present this information on a like-for-like basis with the future contractual arrangements under the JV, we have estimated a historical distribution agreement and minimum revenue guarantee as though our arrangements with the JV have always been in place. This charge from the JV is included within ‘TV programme rights charges’ in our costs breakdown. This is an estimate only and may have materially differed from actual contractual arrangements had they been negotiated at that time.

These outlined changes to revenue and cost would have translated to an estimated uplift to BT Group adjusted EBITDA of c.£200m in each of FY21 and FY22 on a pro forma basis. For FY23, BT Sport on a standalone basis was expected to benefit from increased revenue from commercial premises and lower sports rights costs. As a result, although creation of the JV would have increased BT Group EBITDA by £42m in Q1 FY23, this benefit reduces materially after Q1 FY23.
About Sky

With 24 million customers across seven countries, Sky is Europe’s leading media and entertainment company and is proud to be part of the Comcast group. Our 32,000 employees help connect our customers to the very best entertainment, sports, news, arts and to our own local, original content.

Following the success of Sky originals like Chernobyl, we plan to double our investment in original content by 2024. We’re also developing a new TV and movie studio, Sky Studios Elstree, which is expected to lead to the creation of over 2,000 new jobs and generate an additional £3 billion of production investment in the UK creative sector in the first five years alone.

Our technology allows customers to watch what they want when they want, how they want, and as we connect millions of families to the content they love, we believe it is our responsibility to do it safely. That’s why we offer services like Sky Broadband Buddy and the Sky Kids app. And our online streaming service, NOW TV, brings viewers all the enjoyment of Sky with the flexibility of a contract-free service.

We also believe that a company of our scale has a responsibility that goes beyond our business, and into the community. We recently announced a series of commitments to help tackle racial injustice and improve diversity and inclusion. To ensure the commitments are delivered, Sky will invest £10million per year across its markets for each of the next three years. We’re committed to being Europe’s first net-zero carbon entertainment company by 2030 – two decades before we have to – and we’re an inclusive employer recognised by The Times and Stonewall for our commitment to diversity.

BT Sport award Sky Media their advertising sales contract

Sky Media will now sell advertisements and sponsorship for BT Sport

BT and Sky have agreed a new multi-year partnership that broadens and deepens their strong commercial relationship. Sky Media, the advertising sales arm of Sky, will now sell advertisements and sponsorship across all BT Sport channels in the UK.

Following a competitive tender process, BT Sport has awarded their advertising sales contract to Sky Media, who will replace Channel 4. The agreement means that Sky Media will exclusively sell advertisements and sponsorship across both residential and commercial feeds of all BT Sport channels in the UK as well as the BT Sport app and website.

Sky Media currently represents all of Sky’s channels and also sells on behalf of a range of major broadcasters and channels including Channel 5, Viacom and Discovery.

Andy Haworth, Managing Director, BT Sport said, “Channel 4 has been a great partner who has been with us since launch and has helped us become the established business we are today. I would like to thank them for all of their hard work and support. We are excited to be forging a new partnership with the Sky Media team, whose expertise in the sport market stood out, we are excited about the new opportunities this will bring and look forward to working together.”

Patrick Behar, Chief Business Officer, Sky said: “This new agreement between BT Sport and Sky Media is just another step forward in deepening the longstanding partnership between BT and Sky. From rolling out our world-class entertainment on BT TV through our NOW TV service, and reaching a deal to offer both parties’ sports offerings in one place earlier this year, our relationship is going from strength to strength. This latest agreement is another perfect fit for both of us and it will mean Sky Media can offer clients all the best sports advertising available in the UK, in one place.”

This deal follows the content deal agreed between the two media firms in 2017, which allowed Sky customers to add BT Sport to their Sky subscriptions and BT TV customers to access NOW TV content on their set-top boxes for the first time, earlier this year.

BT Sport,SKY

BT Sport launches a Back to Business offer, customers who re-contract will not have to pay full price until 2021 and will experience an average saving of 50% off their monthly charges from July to December.

BT Sport offer digital skills programme to help pubs and clubs post COVID-19 pandemic

BT Sport have today announced that it will remain free for pubs and clubs until August, recognising the extremely difficult circumstances that the on-trade industry faces as they plan to reopen post lockdown.

From August, existing customers who re-contract will receive a Back to Business offer, which will apply a 70% discount on a customer’s charges in August. The discount will then decrease on a monthly basis until the end of the year, when standard charges will resume. This means from July to December, customers taking the offer will experience an average saving of 50% every month.

Bruce Cuthbert, director of commercial customers, BT Sport said: “We recognise that when pubs re-open they will be operating within challenging restrictions whilst trying to reconnect with their customers and communities. During this time we are committed to supporting our customers and helping them get back to business in a sustainable way. We hope that our approach, along with the free digital training we are offering to the industry, will help pubs and clubs make a strong recovery from the impact of Covid-19.”

Pubs and clubs who want to show live sport in their venue must adhere to the government guidelines, including maintaining social distancing and ensuring that customers do not unduly raise their voices. It is advised that when showing live sport that the volume is kept low and that customers are encouraged not to raise their voices and maintain social distancing.

This summer BT Sport customers will be able to show live football from the Premier League, FA Cup, UEFA Champions League and UEFA Europa League.

Announced earlier this month, BT Sport is offering free digital support and training to pubs and clubs to help them overcome the challenges presented by the COVID-19 pandemic. The programme follows on from previous work with Google and will be split into three areas: online webinars, instructional videos and 1-2-1 digital training for BT Sport customers.

Three webinars are available on the BT Business YouTube page, each tailored to the hospitality sector and on-trade market and are open for anyone to join. The webinars have been created with help from the BII, Hospitality Ulster and Club Mirror and cover how venues can use an online presence to drive footfall and boost consumer confidence.

In addition to the webinars, later this month a series of short, instructional videos will be released on BT’s website and social media which cover a range of topics and also address potential solutions to the problems posed by the pandemic.

BT Sport customers will also have access to 1-2-1 digital training with the BT Sport team. Sessions can be booked online and will be run over Skype, with specially trained BT agents who are on hand to help you and your venue. These will be allocated on a first-come-first-served basis.

Demonstration maintains BT Sport and Samsung’s leadership in delivering world class viewer experiences

Today BT Sport and Samsung screened the UK’s first public live 8K sports broadcast, with a screening of the UEFA Europa League match between Arsenal and Olympiacos (round of 32).

BT Sport and Samsung collaborated to make history by delivering the broadcast live from the Emirates Stadium using a bespoke BT Sport 8K outside broadcast set up, delivered to Samsung QLED 8K TVs.

Samsung showcased the match on its flagship QLED 8K TV, offering a glimpse into the future of entertainment technology and providing an unprecedented viewing experience. With resolution that is four times that of 4K, with a total of 33 million pixels supported by HDR10+, the Samsung QLED 8K TV offers picture perfection that makes viewers feel as though they are really part of the action.

BT has a track record of industry-leading innovation in broadcast, with BT Sport operating from one of industry’s most sophisticated TV studios and delivering world-firsts in recent years around Virtual Reality, Dolby Atmos sound, 4K UHD picture quality and remote production. Last year it launched BT Sport Ultimate, the world’s first service to feature regular programming in High Dynamic Range (HDR), as well as 4K UHD and Dolby Atmos. Today’s broadcast over IP enhances the potential of BT Sport Ultimate, a service which provides viewers with the best viewing experience possible on the platforms and devices they use to watch on.

The showcase builds on BT and Samsung’s extensive relationship, with the companies combining expertise and technology to create entertainment experiences that are at the cutting edge of innovation.

Jamie Hindhaugh, chief operating officer, BT Sport, said: “BT Sport has a rich history of leading the industry with broadcast innovation to provide our customers the best viewing experience in the UK. Whether it’s last season’s launch of the world’s first regular high dynamic range service, BT Sport Ultimate, or, our world-leading remote production activity we’re constantly working to provide the best possible experience. Today’s broadcast in partnership with Samsung continues BT’s mission to take our viewers to the heart of sport and serve them the ultimate viewing experience.”

Dan Hastings, Director of TV and AV at Samsung UK said: “For 50 years Samsung has pioneered the TV category; from the launch of the World’s first Digital Colour TV in 1998, the world's thinnest TV in 2002, the first double-sided LCD screen in 2006 and then one of our biggest advancements to date; the first company to bring 8K TVs to the UK in 2018. We have shown that we never rest when it comes to pursuing meaningful innovations that could supercharge the way people consume content. It is great that we can add showing the first 8K broadcast to that list with BT Sport in 2020.”

bt tv,Samsung,BT Sport

Film explores city’s sporting success in the ‘80s amid political and cultural upheaval

Features interviews with Lord Heseltine, Peter Reid, Derek Hatton and David Morrissey

BT Sport accessible in more ways than ever: mobile app, TV, connected devices app

Two Tribes – How Football Saved a City, the next film in the award-winning BT Sport Films series, will premiere at 9pm on Saturday 30 March on BT Sport 1.

Marked by unrest and economic decline, Liverpool in the 1980s found itself disparaged by many. Militant councillor and ardent Evertonian, Derek Hatton, the deputy leader of Liverpool City Council, led a rebellion against government cuts and put the city on a collision course with the Conservatives and with the Labour Party itself. Meanwhile, TV programmes such as Boys from the Black Stuff pricked the nation’s consciousness to the plight of Liverpool’s suffering while unwittingly reinforcing negative images of the city.

Against this backdrop rose the city’s two football teams, with Everton and Liverpool dominating the domestic and European game for the next ten years, offering Liverpudlians fresh hope and an identity that was not limited to Red or Blue. Their sporting dominance reached a high in 1984 when the League Cup Final between Liverpool and Everton became the first ever all-Merseyside Wembley Final. A third of the city’s male population made its way to London allowing 100,000 Liverpudlians to demonstrate civic pride.

The league title stayed on Merseyside for eight out of ten years as performances on the football pitch became the city’s primary form of opposition. But then, in tragic circumstances, the sport that had given its people a voice, shook the city through the disasters at Heysel and Hillsborough.

Together with interviews with those who lived through the era, Two Tribes features rare archive including the 1984 League Cup Final and the Merseyside derby FA Cup Finals of 1986 and 1989. Contributors include Hatton and Lord Michael Heseltine, footballers Peter Reid and Steve McMahon, actor David Morrissey, plus musicians Peter Wylie of the Mighty Wah! and Peter Hooton of the Farm, with archive featuring Holly Johnson from Frankie Goes To Hollywood and Ian McCullouch of Echo and the Bunnymen.

Simon Green, head of BT Sport, said: “Two Tribes is a thought-provoking examination of how football transcends sport and becomes central to wider society. The filmcontinues BT Sport Films’ strong output of original films this season, following Brian O’Driscoll’s moving exploration of the Irish national rugby team in Shoulder to Shoulder, and Too Good to Go Down, the story of how relegation allowed Manchester United to find a new identity.”

Tenmonkeys have been commissioned by BT Sport to produce the film. Sally Brown is executive producer for BT Sport, with Caj Sohal producer and Andy Wells director for Tenmonkeys. It is the latest in the award-winning BT Sport Films series:

Shoulder to Shoulder: how the Irish national rugby union team has brought together players and fans from two separate countries and competes as on

Brothers in Football: the extraordinary true story of how South London amateurs Corinthian-Casuals, set out on a pilgrimage to finally play a historic match that was abandoned on the eve of the Great War

Too Good to Go Down: rarely-told story of how relegation in the mid-1970s enabled the modern-day Manchester United to emerge

In addition to acclaimed original films, BT Sport is the sole home of the UEFA Champions League, continues with Premier League coverage, is offering more matches than before from the Emirates FA Cup and continues with exclusive coverage of MotoGP. BT Sport is also the home of domestic and European club rugby, while boxing fans can look forward to a top-class line up of fight nights featuring boxers from the Frank Warren stable.

Consumer,BT Sport
