This can range from company laptops and mobile phones through to IoT devices such as office security cameras. Once a system vulnerability has been identified, it can lead to the launch of a cyber-attack such as ransomware, which can compromise an entire business.</span></p><p><span>BT’s new data shows that professional services such as accountancy, legal and consultancy firms are the most targeted sector for ransomware attacks, followed by retail businesses. The hospitality and leisure sector is the third-largest victim in the last year, as criminals look to exploit valuable guest data and payment details. Ransomware hits smaller businesses the hardest, with firms employing fewer than 25 staff the most targeted group for attacks</span><a href="#note"><span><sup>1</sup></span></a><span>.</span></p><p><span>To help businesses stay ahead of evolving cyber risks, BT partnered with global cybersecurity leader </span><a href="https://www.crowdstrike.com/en-us/" target="_blank"><span>CrowdStrike</span></a><span> to launch BT Business Antivirus Detect and Respond. Powered by </span><a href="https://www.crowdstrike.com/en-gb/products/bundles/falcon-go/" target="_blank"><span>CrowdStrike Falcon® Go</span></a><span>, the service leverages CrowdStrike’s industry-leading, AI-native technology to proactively stop threats before they become breaches. Available exclusively in the UK with BT, it extends the same AI-powered cybersecurity trusted by the world’s largest enterprises to smaller businesses, helping every organisation defend against today’s adversaries.</span></p><p><span>The launch comes as CrowdStrike’s </span><a href="https://www.crowdstrike.com/en-us/resources/reports/state-of-smb-cybersecurity-survey/" target="_blank"><span>State of SMB Cybersecurity Survey</span></a><span> reveals only 11% of small businesses use AI in their defences – even as cybercriminals increasingly weaponise AI to scale their attacks. In March, the UK’s National Cyber Security Centre said “keeping pace with frontier AI capabilities” would be key to being resilient against threats in the next decade.</span><br><br><span><strong>Chris Sims, Chief Commercial Officer at BT Business, said: </strong>“Cybercrime is a threat to all businesses, not just the household names that make headlines when they get hacked. It also finds web-connected devices are scanned over 1,000 times a day by known malicious sources — an average of once every 90 seconds. While some scans are conducted legitimately for security monitoring, three in four (78 per cent) are not harmless — indicating that hackers are looking for weaknesses in the online systems of businesses and essential public services, as smart tech becomes common. BT’s data revealed a 1,234 per cent annual rise in new malicious internet protocol (IP) scanners recorded across its networks in the 12 months to July 2024. While some scans are conducted legitimately for security monitoring, three in four (78%) are not harmless – indicating that hackers are looking for weaknesses in the online systems of businesses and essential public services, as smart tech becomes common.</span></p><p style="text-align:justify;"><span>The data revealed a 1,234% annual rise in new malicious internet protocol (IP) scanners recorded across BT’s networks in the 12 months to July. The increase reflects how cyber criminals are increasingly scanning for vulnerabilities through automated, ‘one time use’ disposable bots, in an attempt to evade existing blocking and security measures.</span></p><p style="text-align:justify;"><span>BT’s analysis also showed that IT, defence and financial services are the three most targeted industries for cyber attacks but, increasingly, less traditional sectors like retail, education, and hospitality – which may not have focused as much on their security – have also found themselves in the hackers’ sights.</span></p><p style="text-align:justify;"><span>Businesses worldwide are navigating a once-in-a-generation digital revolution, with AI, Internet of Things, and cloud technology being incorporated into everyday operations. While these give organisations the opportunity to futureproof themselves and gain a competitive edge, they also introduce new risks.</span></p><p style="text-align:justify;"><span>The National Cyber Security Centre (NCSC) has said that AI will “almost certainly increase the volume and heighten the impact” of cyber attacks over the next two years, while cyber criminals are increasingly using the tech to conduct their reconnaissance and carry out more sophisticated attacks. The global ransomware threat is also set to increase due to AI, with the NCSC explaining it will make it easier for novice cyber criminals to hack into businesses<sup> [2]</sup>.</span></p><p style="text-align:justify;"><span>BT research suggests UK business tech investment will rise by a third (31%) in 2024<sup>[3]</sup>, yet many companies are upgrading their systems and adding more connected devices without a comprehensive cyber security plan to back them up, leaving them vulnerable to attacks.</span></p><p style="text-align:justify;"><span>To help businesses better understand the cyber security landscape – and stay one step ahead of hackers – BT has teamed up with international digital intelligence expert Ben Owen, best known for his role as global hunter on the reality TV show </span><i><span>Hunted</span></i><span>, to share insights into the mind of a cyber criminal.</span></p><p style="text-align:justify;"><span>The former spy said that hackers’ natural desire to increase their volume of scam attempts means many have been early adopters of AI. He warned that UK organisations need to match the hackers’ evolution by using advanced technology and tools in their cyber defences. An example is BT’s security platform Eagle-i, which uses AI to predict, detect and neutralise cyber attacks, and machine learning to help improve its knowledge of threats.</span></p><p style="text-align:justify;"><span><strong>Cybersecurity expert Ben Owen said</strong>: </span><i><span>“Businesses are connecting more devices and adopting new AI tools every day; but hackers are using the same tech to break their defences. It’s an AI arms race that companies can’t afford to lose. Importantly, while advanced technology is set to boost the number of cyber attacks and lower the bar for rookie criminals, it will not change their primary target – low-hanging fruit. The online 16-week course will retrain current BT employees and equip them with the skills needed to pursue a new career in Security – one of the fastest growing parts of BT.</span></p><p style="text-align:justify;"><span>The programme is being launched to help tackle the shortfall of people with cyber security skills, which has become a serious issue for businesses of all types. The Department for Digital Culture, Media & Sport (</span><a href="https://assets.publishing.service.gov.uk/government/uploads/system/uploads/attachment_data/file/1042429/Cyber_skills_in_the_labour_market_report_v6_.pdf" target="_blank"><span>DCMS</span></a><span>) estimates that approximately half of UK organisations have a basic cyber skills gap, while at the same time, the ‘Great Resignation’ is signalling a thirst for change amongst the nation’s workforce.</span></p><p style="text-align:justify;"><span>After a rigorous recruitment process, 30 employees have been selected from BT’s Consumer and Global divisions across the UK and will start the scheme today with an in-person induction day in Birmingham. Course participants will secure a new cyber security role at the end of the programme.</span></p><p style="text-align:justify;"><span>BT learners will study an accredited, interactive and team-based learning curriculum. Developed and delivered by CAPSLOCK’s industry experts and academic professionals, it will simulate the full spectrum of real-world cyber problems from managing incidents, detecting malware and social engineering threats, to penetration testing, governance, risk and policy. This career-changing opportunity will provide BT learners with sought after skills and up to five certifications.</span></p><p style="text-align:justify;"><span>Perceptions of the cyber security profession unfortunately remain centred around those with a set of highly specialised technical skills. The reality is that the field needs a broad array of skills and experts to fill a range of roles, many of which rely on transferable skills that some people already possess or, importantly, can be easily developed through a programme such as CAPSLOCK.</span></p><p style="text-align:justify;"><span>Although BT will offer learners a number of roles suited to both technical and non-technical skillsets, it is the harder-to-fill more technical roles that this programme will address. Jobs available will include cyber operations, threat intelligence and technical design and will be located in Manchester, Bristol, Birmingham and Glasgow.</span></p><p style="text-align:justify;"><span>What’s more, during the course CAPSLOCK will provide dedicated learner support including one-to-one professional coaching, careers counselling and mental health first aiders.</span></p><p style="text-align:justify;"><span>The new launch of the programme reinforces BT’s investment in its people across the organisation and its commitment to training, development, and now reskilling to future-proof its employees’ careers.                         <title>Careers for girls in cyber security: it’s not only for hackers and geeks</title>

                        <guid>https://newsroom.bt.com/careers-for-girls-in-cyber-security-its-not-only-for-hackers-and-geeks/</guid><pp:caseid>493359</pp:caseid><description><![CDATA[<img src="https://content.presspage.com/uploads/2429/1920_cyberfirst.jpg?10000"><p><strong>By Lynn Studd, Director of Global Secure Solutions</strong></p><p>Last weekend I had the honour of presenting prizes to the winners of the East of England Final at this year’s National Cyber Security Centre’s (NCSC) <a href="https://www.ncsc.gov.uk/cyberfirst/girls-competition"><span>CyberFirst Girls Competition</span></a><span>.</span></p><p>T<span>he event, one of 13 finals held around the country, took place at the home of BT research and innovation, Adastral Park, Ipswich, where Watford Grammar School for Girls were announced the winners by the NCSC.</span></p><p>For a number of years, voices from across the security industry have highlighted a cyber skills gap – a profession that needs to attract more than 4 million more dedicated and trained colleagues globally.</p><p>And yet, the strong job stability and career path that cybersecurity offers aren’t so widely enjoyed by women and girls who are under-represented in the profession. So, what’s going on?</p><p>Well, as Sheryl Sandberg once said, “you can’t be what you can’t see.” Nearly a decade on, this still rings true. Just 16% of the cyber workforce identify as female.</p><p>Education from an early age is, of course, a major part of closing the gender gap in cyber. Schools are persistently working to encourage gender diversity in STEM. But it goes beyond education and requires encouragement and exposure to the world of cybersecurity from an early age.</p><p>We need to provide a forum for school children to engage with and understand the profession, using demonstrations, workshops and classes to inspire them to strive for cybersecurity careers.</p><p>The answer may lie in the perception of the cybersecurity profession as aspirational, only for those with a set of highly specialised technical skills. But, for girls who don’t fancy themselves as the next ethical hackers of the world, cyber security isn’t just about computers and coding, and it’s not only for hackers and geeks.</p><p>We too often focus on the components of cyber security (like coding networks and hardware), but not what the role itself looks and feels like. It follows the signing of a new contract between the two companies.</span></p><p><span>The new contract builds on an existing agreement, signed in 2014, under which BT consolidated and optimised the leading global technology company’s international communications infrastructure. Working with ABB’s Information Systems team, BT will now transform the network infrastructure to create a sustainable, resilient and secure core platform featuring a highly automated and data-driven managed service.</span></p><p><span>Security is a top priority for ABB as it executes its cloud strategy, which includes consolidating data centres and moving more applications and data into the cloud. BT will enable ABB’s cloud-first ambitions with an end-to-end, compliant, multi-layered cyber security environment. It will deploy, manage and monitor over 1,100 end-point devices, continuously verifying every device, user and application accessing the network.</span></p><p><span>The communications infrastructure will reliably and securely connect people, devices and machines at over 600 facilities in 60 countries. Using the latest software-defined networking technology, it will offer ABB a choice of connectivity options for each site, including 5G access.</span></p><p><span>It will also provide ABB with a new software-driven platform delivered over Wifi 6 to enable mobility and digital manufacturing concepts, such as robotics, Internet of Things (IoT) and Big Data technologies at production sites. Using the spread of viruses in human populations as a model to inform its AI, Inflame is a key component in BT’s recently-announced Eagle-i platform.</span></p><p><span>Epidemiological modelling is typically associated with the spread of viruses and diseases amongst human populations, and has been critical in analysing and managing the spread of COVID-19 over the past 20 months. Using the same principals of epidemiology, BT’s Inflame solution has been developed to understand how computer viruses and cyber-attacks spread across enterprise networks, and how to prevent them from happening.</span></p><p><span>To develop the technology, security researchers at the BT Labs in Suffolk, UK, built models of enterprise networks which were used to test numerous scenarios based on differing R rates</span><a href="#_ftn1"><span class="MsoFootnoteReference"><u>[1]</u></span></a><span> of cyber-infection. This testing enabled the research team to understand how these threats can penetrate and compromise a network, and develop optimal automated responses needed to contain and prevent the spread of viruses across them.</span></p><p><span>The deep reinforcement training and learning undertaken in the development of Inflame means the solution can automatically model and respond to a detected threat within an enterprise network. These responses are also underpinned by ‘attack lifecycle’ modelling, which assesses real-time security alerts against established patterns to understand the current stage of an ongoing cyber-attack. This insight is used to predict the next stages of an attack and rapidly identify the best response to prevent it from progressing any further.</span></p><p><span>BT recently announced its transformational cyber defence platform ‘</span><a href="http://www.bt.com/look-again"><span><u>Eagle-i'</u></span></a><span>, which uses AI to provide real-time detection of issues and intelligent automated responses. The platform has been designed to self-learn from the intelligence provided by each intervention, so that it constantly improves its threat knowledge and dynamically refines how it protects other users going forward.</span></p><p><span>“We know the risk of cyber-attack is higher than ever and has intensified significantly during the pandemic. In this blog, Kevin Brown (Managing Director, BT Security) and Chris Ensor (Deputy Director for Cyber Growth, NCSC) look at the cyber skills gap, and how initiatives such as CyberFirst are helping to tackle this issue.</strong></span></span></span></p><p><span><span><span>For a number of years, voices from across the security industry have highlighted a cyber skills gap, where there simply aren&rsquo;t enough people with the right knowledge and skills to fill the number of cyber security jobs available. Both private & public sector organisations from across the world are impacted by this, with many publicly committing to work collaboratively to tackle this issue.</span></span></span></p><p><span><span><span>Developing the next generation of skilled cyber professionals is understandably a long-term process &ndash; whether that be training young people from school onwards through to reskilling current professionals with transferable experience. Yet the need for new talent is already immediate. The unprecedented growth in people spending more time online over the past 18 months has highlighted the importance of the cyber security industry and <a href="https://cybersecurityventures.com/jobs/" style="text-decoration:underline">some estimates suggest</a> there could be currently 3.5 million unfilled cyber security vacancies across the globe.</span></span></span></p><p><span><span><span><a href="https://www.ncsc.gov.uk/cyberfirst/overview" style="text-decoration:underline">The CyberFirst programme</a>, run by the National Cyber Security Centre &ndash; a part of GCHQ &ndash; is at the core of the UK&rsquo;s response to this issue. The programme was set up in 2016 to help young people aged 11 to 21 explore their passion for technology through cyber security and to support those with an aptitude for the subject to pursue careers in the field.</span></span></span></p><p><span><span><span>It also has a clear objective to improve diversity in the cyber sector, with initiatives aimed at inspiring more girls to take up opportunities to enter cyber security jobs. The <a href="https://www.ncsc.gov.uk/cyberfirst/girls-competition">CyberFirst Girls <span class="MsoHyperlink">Competition</span></a>, for example, is the UK&rsquo;s flagship cyber contest for schools, and through online challenges and puzzles, girls aged 12 to 13 are introduced to the fast-paced world of cyber security.<a href="#_ftn1" name="_ftnref1" style="text-decoration:underline" title=""><span class="MsoFootnoteReference"><span class="MsoFootnoteReference"><span><span><span>[1]</span></span></span></span></span></a></span></span></span></p><p><span><span><span>BT has supported CyberFirst since its inception, and in recognition of its long-term advocacy and increased support over the past 12 months it was recently awarded &lsquo;Partner&rsquo; status. BT is one of only 7 companies<a href="#_ftn2" name="_ftnref2" style="text-decoration:underline" title=""><span class="MsoFootnoteReference"><span class="MsoFootnoteReference"><span><span><span>[2]</span></span></span></span></span></a> to have this status, which will allow it to play a more active role in defining the strategy and direction of the programme. It also recognises how BT has engaged with the CyberFirst programme to develop its recruitment processes and provide real near-term benefits to its workforce.</span></span></span></p><p><span><span><span>BT has achieved this by ensuring that its work with CyberFirst is focused on one key principle &ndash; that, fundamentally, everyone benefits if we can make it easier for skilled and passionate people to actually enter roles in the cyber industry. It may sound simplistic or obvious, but one of the most impactful things we can do is to remove some of the hurdles, complications and delays that young people face when trying to join the sector.</span></span></span></p><p><span><span><span>For example, every year, the CyberFirst programme sets up hundreds of summer placements for carefully selected and security-checked university students on its bursary programme and they are placed at organisations across the cyber industry, including BT.</span></span></span></p><p><span><span><span>The benefits of these placements are evident, for the students who gain practical real-world experience of cyber careers and for the organisations in identifying talented people. However, some organisations do not take the logical next step and set up a process which allows talented students to create a future commitment with the company they were placed with. Instead, upon graduating from university, students simply go onto the job market.</span></span></span></p><p><span><span><span>In response to this, BT has streamlined its recruitment processes to improve its conversion of CyberFirst summer placement students onto its graduate programme. We have worked collaboratively to align our respective recruitment and assessment processes, resulting in a model where CyberFirst placement students receive an offer to join BT&rsquo;s graduate scheme prior to their return to the final year of university (rather than needing to wait until they&rsquo;ve finished their degrees).</span></span></span></p><p><span><span><span>This year, 22 CyberFirst bursary students were recruited by BT for its 2021 Summer Placement programme, which is the largest number since it started working with CyberFirst. The placements began in June and will run for 10 weeks, and provided the students meet the criteria we hope that many will go on to join the graduate programme.</span></span></span></p><p><span><span><span>Solutions for the cyber skills gap, and the impact of initiatives to tackle it, will not be instant. However, by working collaboratively across the public and private sector, we can build momentum that will create the workforce needed to tackle the security problems of the future. ]]></pp:boilerplate><description><![CDATA[<p><span><span><span><b><span><span><span>BT Security&rsquo;s largest ever research project identifies the major trends that are changing the role of the CISO, and some worrying behaviours that show the need for a strategic response</span></span></span></b></span></span></span></p><p><span><span><span><span><span><span>BT Security has published the results of a global survey which canvassed the opinions of over 7000 business leaders, employees and consumers from across the world. The research, conducted in partnership with Davies Hickman Partners, found that in a rapidly changing business environment, the role of the CISO has hugely expanded in its scope and responsibilities. With the research also identifying security as the top priority for businesses after coronavirus, CISOs have never been more integral to business operations.</span></span></span></span></span></span></p><p><span><span><span><span><span><span>With this in mind, the research&rsquo;s finding that 76% of business executives rate their organisation&rsquo;s IT strategy as excellent or good at protecting against cybersecurity threats seems like positive news. Yet in spite of this, the research also found that this might be&nbsp;misplaced confidence which is leading to complacency, with 84% of executives also saying that their organisation had suffered from data loss or a security incident in the last two years &ndash; highlighting the enormity of the task that CISOs face.</span></span></span></span></span></span></p><p><span><span><span><span><span><span>The research uncovered a number of interesting reasons why this might be happening. Less than half of respondents said they had definitely received training on data security, while only one in three were fully aware of the policies and procedures they should take to protect the security of their organisation&rsquo;s data. As a result, a number of concerning behavioural trends were seen, with 45% of employees saying they&rsquo;d suffered a security incident at work and not reported it, and perhaps even more worryingly, 15% saying they had given their work log-in and password to others in the organisation.</span></span></span></span></span></span></p><p><span><span><span><span><span><span>Regular cyber security training for employees is critical, not least because of the increasing importance that consumers are placing on security. The research found that nearly two thirds of consumers would recommend an organisation that makes a big effort to keep their data safe, and a similar number said that security is more important than convenience when choosing who to buy from. The capacity for security to act as a brand differentiator becomes even clearer with the finding that only 16% of consumers strongly trust large organisations to protect their personal data.</span></span></span></span></span></span></p><p><span><span><span><span><span><span>In light of these trends and attitudes, the role of the CISO is simultaneously more critical and more multifaceted than even before. Their job is no longer just to protect against threats and manage risk; they are now expected to play a crucial role in managing brand perception, employee engagement and the strategic adoption of new technologies. In spite of this, the research found that less than half of executives and employees could put a name to their CISO (or equivalent), with a similar ratio of respondents saying that their CISO doesn&rsquo;t actively communicate with the rest of the organisation.</span></span></span></span></span></span></p><p><span><span><span><span><span><span>Kevin Brown, Managing Director of BT Security, said: &ldquo;This report provides a number of clear examples of how CISOs are now expected to provide leadership across an ever-growing number of areas. The huge increase in the pace of digital transformation during 2020 has not only further erased the traditional parameters of the role, but also intensified the scale and complexity of threats to protect against. As a result, CISOs must ensure that they have the visibility that not only makes them the first port of call for security incidents, but also ensures they&rsquo;re placed at the heart of strategic decision making and planning.&rdquo;</span></span></span></span></span></span></p><p><span><span><span><span><span><span>Craig Jones, Director of Cybercrime at INTERPOL, commented: &ldquo;The range and scale of cybercrime faced by governments, businesses and individuals is constantly growing. We firmly believe in working collaboratively across the public and private sector to make&nbsp;cyberspace a safer place, and this very much includes CISOs, who are often the first line of defence in responding to cyberattacks. ]]></pp:boilerplate><description><![CDATA[<p><span><span><span>BT has joined forces with high-tech Cambridge spin-out Nu-Quantum, other UK start-ups, Research and Technology Organisations (RTOs) and university partners, as part of a world-first trial of end-to-end quantum-secured communications for 5G and connected cars.</span></span></span></p><p><span><span><span><span>The AIRQKD trial combines BT&rsquo;s globally leading expertise in building quantum-secure networks using QKD (Quantum Key Distribution &ndash; an essentially un-hackable, cutting edge technique for sharing encryption &lsquo;keys&rsquo; between locations using a stream of single photons) with other new techniques for applying quantum security to mobile devices, developed by UK start-ups Nu Quantum, Angoka and Duality.</span></span></span></span></p><p><span><span><span><span>The trial, which will run for 36 months, is funded with &pound;7.7M by the Quantum Technologies Challenge, led by UK Research and Innovation. It will for the first time combine Quantum Key Distribution over fixed fibre and free-space networks (point-to-point laser connections between cell sites), with quantum-enhanced security chips in mobile devices.</span></span></span></span></p><p><span><span><span><span>In combination, these technologies will be used to deliver an ultra-secure link between connected 5G towers and mobile devices, as well as to connected cars, in conjunction with the Warwick Manufacturing Group at Warwick University.</span></span></span></span></p><p><span><span><span>The new trial builds upon BT&rsquo;s current fibre-based testbed for QKD, which runs between Cambridge and the BT Labs at Adastral Park, Suffolk. It will pave the way for the development of a wide range of quantum-secured use-cases, for applications where ultra-security of data transfer is especially important.</span></span></span></p><p><span><span><span>Cambridge-based Nu Quantum, one of the UK&rsquo;s newest quantum technology start-ups, will be the provider of quantum components: small modules capable of manipulating the faintest light signals (single photons of light) to generate and communicate absolutely secure quantum encryption keys.</span></span></span></p><p><span><span><span>Other partners include Belfast-based Angoka, Bristol&rsquo;s Duality Quantum Photonics and London-based Arqit; all cutting-edge start-ups specialising in the new field of Quantum tech, in which the UK is increasingly seen as taking an early lead.</span></span></span></p><p><span><span><span>Professor Andrew Lord, BT&rsquo;s head of optical network research, said: &ldquo;The UK has firmly established itself as a global leader in quantum-based network security. In fact, in a recent survey 65% of small businesses said they had sought external information or guidance on security in the last 12 months<a href="#_ftn1"><span><span><span><span><span>[1]</span></span></span></span></span></a>, with many organizations remaining unclear on the appropriate methods to safeguard their business.</span></span></span></p>

<p><span><span><span>In response, BT have partnered with the National Cyber Security Centre (NCSC) to provide businesses with top tips for staying secure online. The NCSC is the nation&rsquo;s technical authority on cyber security and provides products and guidance for SMEs, larger organisations, government agencies and the public.</span></span></span></p>

<p><span><span><span><b>Tip 1 &ndash; Backing up Your Data</b></span></span></span></p>

<p><span><span><span>All businesses, regardless of size, should take regular backups of their important data, and make sure that these backups are recent and can be restored. By doing this, you are ensuring your business can still function following the impact of flood, fire, physical damage, or theft. Furthermore, if you have backups of your data that you can quickly respond and recover in the event of a cyber breach</span></span></span></p>

<p><span><span><span>Your first step is to identify your essential data. This is the information that your business could not function without. Normally, this will comprise of documents, photos, emails, contacts, and calendars, most of which are kept in just a few common folders on your computer, phone, tablet, or network.</span></span></span></p>

<p><span><span><span>Once you have identified your most important data, keep your backups separate from your main computers. Whether it's on a USB stick, on a separate drive or a separate computer, access to data backups should be restricted so that they are not accessible by unauthorised staff members and are not permanently connected to the device holding the original copy. You can also back up your data with <span><span><a href="https://www.bt.com/help/broadband/getting-started-with-bt-cloud">cloud storage</a></span></span>, which means your data is physically separated from your computers and can be accessed from any device, simply by logging into your cloud environment.</span></span></span></p>

<p><span><span><span><b>Tip 2 &ndash;&nbsp;Protecting Your Organisation from Malware</b></span></span></span></p>

<p><span><span><span>Malicious software (also known as 'malware') is software or web content that can harm your organisation. This can include viruses, spyware, or <span><span><a href="https://www.ncsc.gov.uk/guidance/mitigating-malware-and-ransomware-attacks">ransomware</a></span></span> which prevents users from accessing their computers (or the data stored on them) until a ransom is paid.</span></span></span></p>

<p><span><span><span>For all your IT equipment, make sure that the software and firmware is always kept up to date with the latest versions from software developers, hardware suppliers and vendors. Applying these updates is one of the most important things you can do to improve security - the IT version of eating your fruit and veg.</span></span></span></p>

<p><span><span><span>Ensure that your organisation is also running antivirus software across all your laptops and computers. Antivirus software is often included free within popular operating systems and can typically be enabled with one click. This is the same for firewalls which create a 'buffer zone' between your own network and external networks (such as the Internet). BT works with the NCSC on its &lsquo;Active Cyber Defence&rsquo; programme, which aims to prevent the majority of malicious emails from reaching individuals and businesses in the UK &ndash; but most popular operating systems also now include a firewall, which you can switch on to protect yourself even further.</span></span></span></p>

<p><span><span><span><b>Tip 3 &ndash; Avoiding Phishing Attacks</b></span></span></span></p>

<p><span><span><span>A phishing attack is when scammers send fake emails to potential victims, asking them for sensitive information (such as bank details), or containing links to malicious websites. Scammers might try to trick you into sending money, giving away business details to sell on, or have their own motives for accessing your organisation's network.</span></span></span></p>

Never punish users who are struggling to recognise suspicious emails &ndash; users who fear reprisals will not report mistakes promptly, if at all. Instead, build a culture where users can confidently report phishing attempts (including ones that are clicked on) by having an effective process in place for reporting. You can then take steps to scan for malware and change passwords in a timely manner if you suspect a successful breach has occurred.</span></span></span></p>

]]></pp:boilerplate><description><![CDATA[<p align="center"><span><span><em>The 6km network uses Quantum Key Distribution (QKD) to ensure ultra-secure data transmission between the National Composites Centre (NCC) and the Centre for Modelling and Simulation (CFMS) in Bristol</em></span></span></p><p><span><span><strong>1<sup>st</sup> October 2020, London:</strong> BT and Toshiba Europe Limited today announce the UK&rsquo;s first industrial deployment of a quantum-secure network, transmitting between the National Composites Centre (NCC), the UK&rsquo;s world-leading composite research and development facility, and the Centre for Modelling & Simulation (CFMS), a not-for-profit research organisation that pioneers new digital engineering capabilities.</span></span></p><p><span><span>Funded by Innovate UK&rsquo;s <a href="https://gtr.ukri.org/projects?ref=104615">AQuaSeC</a> project, the network demonstrates how Quantum Key Distribution (QKD) &ndash; an essentially un-hackable, cutting edge technique for sharing encryption &lsquo;keys&rsquo; between locations using a stream of single photons &ndash; can be used to secure data traffic between key industrial sites where security is of paramount importance.</span></span></p><p><span><span>The technology solution is being used to replace a &lsquo;manual&rsquo; approach of physically transporting sensitive data on portable storage devices between the NCC and CFMS sites in Emerson&rsquo;s Green and Filton in North Bristol, as well as at the University of Bristol, thereby saving time and enhancing the security of critical data. Instead of physically transmitting the data, it is now transferred at high-speed over 6km of fibre optic cable, along which the encryption keys are also transmitted as a stream of single &lsquo;encoded&rsquo; photons.</span></span></p><p><span><span>Using standard Openreach fibre, Toshiba&rsquo;s QKD system enables the distribution of 1000s of cryptographic keys per second. Its innovative multiplexing compatibility allows the data and the quantum keys to be transmitted on the same fibre, eliminating the need for costly dedicated infrastructure for key distribution. While this first deployment covers a range of 6km, the current maximum range extends up to 120km &ndash; allowing ultra-secure data transmission across major metropolitan environments.</span></span></p><p><span><span>The network also benefits from Toshiba&rsquo;s Active Stabilisation technology, which allows the system to distribute key material continuously, in even the most challenging operating conditions, without any user intervention. This avoids the need for recalibration of the system due to temperature-induced changes in the fibre lengths.</span></span></p><p><span><span>&ldquo;This first industrial deployment of a quantum-secure network in the UK is a significant milestone as we move towards a quantum-ready economy. <p><span><span>BT is one of the first Microsoft Managed Security Service Providers to have been selected for the <a href="https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/security/partnerships/intelligent-security-association">Microsoft Intelligent Security Association</a> (MISA), with the two companies sharing a common vision for cloud services and offering market-leading security capabilities</span> <span>as the need for flexible and scalable technology solutions drive cloud adoption.</span></span></p>

<p><span><span>BT will provide a managed service for Azure Sentinel&rsquo;s scalable, cloud-native, security information event management (SIEM) and security orchestration automated response (SOAR) solution. The BT managed service includes alert detection, threat visibility and threat response by combining data from the Azure Sentinel workspace with BT&rsquo;s own expertise and extensive threat intelligence gained from protecting one of the world&rsquo;s largest global networks.</span> <span>Customers will also benefit from BT&rsquo;s Security Advisory Services which offer expert guidance to help organisations navigate today&rsquo;s complex cyber security landscape.</span></span></p>

<p><span><span>Using advanced cyber security tools, BT&rsquo;s 16 global Security Operations Centres monitor data ingested into a customer&rsquo;s Azure Sentinel workspace. BT&rsquo;s cyber security experts will detect, analyse and mitigate threats across the customer&rsquo;s Microsoft estate, working closely with incident response teams to protect customer data. The service is available to a wide range of businesses and organisations spanning different industries across the globe.</span></span></p>

                        <title>The NCSC and BT share their top tips to help you stay secure online during coronavirus</title>

<p>The last few weeks have changed the way we use technology in ways we probably never imagined. Many of us are spending more time online, whether that&rsquo;s home schooling, home working, shopping, gaming, or video calling with friends and family.</p>

<p>BT has produced a range of <a href="https://www.bt.com/tech-tips">&lsquo;Top Tips on Tech&rsquo;</a>, which give guidance on online issues ranging from children&rsquo;s safety&nbsp;through to working from home and taking your business online. Throughout all these activities, it&rsquo;s vital that you are doing them securely and protecting yourself from cybercrime. To&nbsp;help you, BT is supporting the government&rsquo;s <a href="https://www.ncsc.gov.uk/cyberaware">Cyber Aware</a> campaign which gives six important tips to stay secure online.</p>

<p>Alongside these top tips, the National Cyber Security Centre (NCSC) has also produced helpful guidance on the secure use of <a href="https://www.ncsc.gov.uk/guidance/video-conferencing-services-using-them-securely">video conferencing</a>, <a href="https://www.ncsc.gov.uk/guidance/online-gaming-for-families-and-individuals">online gaming</a> and <a href="https://www.ncsc.gov.uk/guidance/shopping-online-securely">shopping</a> to help keep us protected during this period of social distancing. Both BT and the NCSC believe making this guidance both easily available and understandable is crucial to keeping the UK safe online, and will explain below&nbsp;how following these steps can help your security.</p>

<p>Your email account contains lots of important information about you and is the gateway to all your other online accounts. If you think about it, if someone gets into your email, they could potentially reset the password on all your online accounts. That&rsquo;s why it&rsquo;s so important to keep it secure by protecting it with a strong password that is different to all your others. But what makes a strong password? Essentially the longer and more unusual your password is, the stronger it becomes and the harder it is for a criminal to hack or guess. The best way to make your password hard to hack is by using a sequence of three random &ndash; but memorable &ndash; words. For example, &ldquo;BeachTarantulaOranges&rdquo; (don&rsquo;t copy this one though&hellip;).</p>

<p>You&rsquo;ve probably got more online accounts than you can keep track of, from banking to shopping to social media to TV streaming services. You should avoid using the same password for different websites and do this by finding a way to remember passwords that works for you. Saving your passwords in your browser or by using a third party password manager is a great way to do this.</p>

<p>For an added layer of security on your important accounts, turn on two-factor authentication (2FA). This is a free security feature that&rsquo;s available on many popular services and helps to prevent criminals accessing your accounts, normally by sending you a text or code when you log in, to check you are who you say you are. So if another person tries to access your account, they&rsquo;re prevented from doing so.</p>

<p>Making sure your devices &ndash; your laptop, phone, tablet, smart speaker &ndash; have the most up to date software and apps is one of the best things you can do to immediately improve your security. Cyber criminals exploit weaknesses in software and apps to access your sensitive personal data, but providers are continually working to keep you secure by releasing regular updates. We&rsquo;d encourage you to regularly check for updates on your devices and apps or set them to automatically update so you don&rsquo;t have to think about it anymore.</p>

<p>If you&rsquo;ve ever left your phone in your pocket and not realised until you heard it bouncing round the washing machine, your first two thoughts were probably &lsquo;that&rsquo;s going to be expensive&rsquo; and &lsquo;I hope I haven&rsquo;t lost all my photos&rsquo;. We can&rsquo;t help with the first thought, but the second one is easy to prepare for &ndash; just turn on automatic backup on your device. Not only will it help keep those treasured memories safe so you can access them again when you get a new device; it will also mean that if your phone, tablet or laptop is hacked you can recover quickly from your backup.</p>

<p>Finally, you may have noticed that cyber criminals using our fear of coronavirus (COVID-19) when sending scam emails that try and trick people into clicking on a bad link. The link could take you to a dodgy website or infect your device with malicious software. You may have received an email that claims to have a &lsquo;cure&rsquo; for the virus or encourages you to donate. If you receive an email that you&rsquo;re not quite sure about, you can send it to the NCSC&rsquo;s Suspicious Email Reporting Service by forwarding it to <a href="mailto:report@phishing.gov.uk">report@phishing.gov.uk</a><u>.</u> If anything is found to be malicious, the NCSC will take it down and you will have helped protect others from falling victim to scams.</p>

<p>BT today announced the launch of its Security Advisory Services practice, marking another step in the ongoing expansion of its cyber security capabilities. The practice will offer strategic security guidance and solutions to organisations across the globe, reflecting the market demand for expert guidance to navigate today&rsquo;s complex cyber security landscape.</p>

<p>BT Security Advisory Services will be led by Tris Morgan, with approximately 300 members of specialist staff based across the globe. They will be supported by the experience and capabilities of the wider BT Security team, which protects BT against 125,000 cyber-attacks per month and provides security solutions to consumers, governments and businesses, including some of the world&rsquo;s best known brands.</p>

<p>The practice will help organisations at all stages of their security journey to assess and test their defences, and select the solutions that match their security needs &ndash; whether that requires building an entirely new security strategy, or upgrading their protections to combat the latest threats and trends.</p>
