It marks the first time that a business has benefitted from access to a partitioned slice from EE’s public network and live 5G Standalone core.</span></p><p><span>Network slicing uses </span><a href="https://newsroom.bt.com/redefining-connectivity--a-new-era-for-our-customers-powered-by-5g-standalone-and-wifi-7/"><span>5G Standalone technology, which BT Group launched last September</span></a><span>, to provide a customer with a protected ‘slice’ of the network for assured performance, boosting connectivity speeds and lowering latency by minimising congestion and unlocking bespoke capacity for businesses.</span></p><p><span>The trial successfully demonstrated the capability of network slicing to bypass congestion in busy locations and keep businesses connected through dedicated quality of service.&nbsp;</span></p><p><span>It follows the availability of 5G standalone connectivity for BT's small business customers as part of the company’s investment in the networks of the future.</span></p><p><span>Belfast’s Christmas Market, which takes place at Belfast City Hall, sees up to 1.2 million visitors each year, with the Lavery’s beer tent proving among the most popular attractions. As Belfast’s oldest family-owned pub, Lavery’s has been at the heart of the city's social life for over 100 years, and the Christmas Market has been one of the most important dates in its diary for two decades.</span></p><p><span><strong>Bernard Lavery, Director, Lavery’s, said: </strong>"With this being the 20<sup>th</sup> year of our festive beer tent, Lavery’s is as synonymous with Belfast Christmas Market as it is with the city itself. In that time, the need to enable fast and reliable mobile payments has only grown thanks to the growing trend towards cashless. It’s brilliant to see Belfast benefit from BT Group’s first ever real-world deployment of network slicing, helping local business Lavery’s to enhance its operations and provide an even better customer experience at the very popular Belfast Christmas Market.”</span></p><p><span>Belfast was one of fifteen launch cities to benefit from the arrival of EE’s 5G Standalone network in September 2024, paving the way for BT Group to roll out network slicing for business customers. The company has been investing heavily in futured-proofed network infrastructure across the region to ensure it is ready for the launch of such services.</span></p><p><span>The real-world deployment at Belfast Christmas Market comes after BT Group </span><a href="https://newsroom.bt.com/bt-group-ericsson-and-qualcomm-technologies-inc-network-slicing-trial-promises-new-consumer-and-enterprise-capabilities-in-5g-sa-era-including-enhanced-mobile-gaming/"><span>successfully demonstrated network slicing</span></a><span> for consumer and enterprise use-cases last year at its pilot cluster in Adastral Park.</span></p><p><span>Other benefits of network slicing include improved security, the ability to quickly adapt the network to meet specific customer needs and the capacity to support IoT sensors. If we just look at the past few months, we’ve announced a technology breakthrough to meet growing customer demand for live TV, we’ve demonstrated network slicing </span><span style="background-color:white;"><span>capabilities for mobile gaming and video conferencing and we’ve conducted</span></span><span> a Microsoft Teams call using </span><span style="background-color:white;"><span>a quantum optical radio receiver in what we believe to be a first.&nbsp;</span></span></p><p style="margin-left:0cm;"><span>These are just a few examples of the brilliant work being delivered across BT Group, and much of this is underpinned by our engineers in Networks. Their passion, ingenuity and technical expertise drives many of the solutions and services for which we are known today.</span></p><p style="margin-left:0cm;"><span>Harnessing and sharing that immense amount of knowledge, skills and expertise has long been an objective of mine, and is why, in part, we set up the BT Tech Fellowship programme two years ago. I’m delighted to see how this has very quickly become a thriving, self-sustaining community within BT Networks.</span></p><p style="margin-left:0cm;"><span>Today, we’re launching a little more formally to the outside world, and the main reason for that is because we’ve recognised our first Fellows – the highest level of achievement within the Fellowship, and a major accomplishment for my four colleagues.</span></p><p style="margin-left:0cm;"><span>But first, a bit about our </span><a href="https://www.bt.com/tech-fellowship"><span>Tech Fellowship</span></a><span>. </span><span style="background-color:white;"><span>It’s a fantastic career development programme led by engineers, for engineers – recognising and inspiring technical talent, providing support and opportunities for skills development, and fostering a community of knowledge sharing by bringing together the full breadth of technical expertise from across BT Group’s Networks unit.</span></span></p><p><span style="background-color:white;">It’s a win for colleagues, for BT Group and for society. For colleagues, they have the opportunity to develop as technical specialists, keep their finger on the pulse of the latest technology</span><span>, and establish themselves as an expert who’ll make an impact in an ever-changing industry.</span><span style="background-color:white;"> For the company, in addition to the fantastic benefits of having a talented and diverse community, the programme enables technical experts to be brought together into ‘squads’ to work on technologies in areas such as AI, Security, Energy in Networks, IoT and Cloud Scaling, bringing together new insights, expertise and ways of thinking. This true innovation that comes from bringing together brilliant people converts not only into products and services for our customers but also, innovations that can transform society.</span></p><p style="margin-left:0cm;"><span style="background-color:white;">There are four levels of involvement in the Tech Fellowship programme: </span><span>Member, Accomplished Engineer, Distinguished Engineer, and Fellow.&nbsp;In the community we already have over 1700 members, with 133 of those recognised as Accomplished Engineers and 35 recognised as Distinguished Engineers. And today, </span><a href="https://www.bt.com/tech-fellowship"><span>I congratulate our first Fellows</span></a><span> – these exceptional colleagues have been awarded the Fellows status in recognition of their contributions to engineering or for their outstanding technical achievements and leadership, and as thought leaders/experts in their given field.</span></p><p><span>I look forward to seeing this community grow and prosper. BT Group plc is listed on the London Stock Exchange.</span></p><p style="margin-left:0cm;"><span>For more information, visit&nbsp;</span><a href="https://www.bt.com/about"><span>www.bt.com/about</span></a></p>]]></pp:boilerplate><description><![CDATA[<p style="text-align:justify;"><span>BT has announced that the first of its high-tech digital street units have gone live in Newcastle.</span></p><p><span>The first seven of BT’s Street Hub 2.0 units have been installed in the city bringing free ultra-fast WiFi, free calls, wayfinding information and rapid device charging.</span></p><p><span>Street Hubs offer a range of benefits including free ultra-fast WiFI, free emergency calls and rapid device charging, and offer a more modern alternative to traditional payphones.</span></p><p><span>They also provide directions for tourists and have the capacity to be fitted with signal boosting 4G and 5G cells.</span></p><p><span>The first Street Hubs were switched on today at the sites including streets in Byker, Benton, Heaton and Haymarket. They form part of BT’s rollout of even better mobile and WiFi connections for communities across the UK.</span></p><p><span>As part of the initiative, BT will also be gifting free advertising to small businesses as they face increased costs during the current economic situation.</span></p><p><span>The company is donating up to £7.5 million of outdoor advertising space to small businesses across the UK as part of the rollout of the new digital units.</span></p><p><span>Michael Smy, Head of Street at BT, said: “Street Hubs provide communities with the improved WiFi and mobile connectivity that is now such a central part of everyday life.</span></p><p><span>“Bringing the Hubs to Newcastle not only allows us to provide the same benefits as traditional payphones, but also offer enhanced and future-proofed technology for the future.</span></p><p><span>“Gifting free advertising to small businesses in the city also means we are able to play our part in supporting its economy.”</span></p><p><span>One of the first businesses in the city to benefit from the free advertising space will be Bud Couriers, based in the city. The organisation won a competition to land the free advertising as part of the introduction of hubs in the city.</span></p><p><span>James Tyer of Bud Couriers said: "The BT Street Hubs have been a blessing for my small business. This month, with the introduction of the clean air zone in Newcastle city centre, these adverts are positioned perfectly to reach those affected by the issue.</span></p><p><span>“Using these boards, we are able to showcase our role as an authority in Newcastle’s urban sustainable logistics."</span></p><p><span>BT is rolling out the Street Hub units across a range of major cities in the UK with Sheffield joining places like Birmingham, Nottingham, and Glasgow.</span></p>]]></description><category><![CDATA[business,Connectivity,Technology,Enterprise]]></category>

It says the study proves the need for new technology but also notes the challenges reported by NHS staff on how health services are adopting this tech on the frontline. 77% of respondents cited lack of funding as a major hurdle, while a lack of existing skills and resources (75%) and areas with no connectivity (58%) are also issues.</span></p><p><span>The research suggests that greater communication around technology adoption will help overcome these barriers, with half agreeing that regular feedback sessions (50%), evidence of benefits (51%) and having a clear roadmap (55%) will improve technology adoption and enhance their own role. There are also strong calls for more co-creation during the development of solutions. 79% cite the benefits of PPI groups (patient, public involvement) as part of any technology design or deployment project within the NHS.</span></p><p><span><strong>Staff are the enablers, and tech can help boost recruitment</strong></span></p><p><span>The study shows that healthcare professionals view technology as having an important role to play in addressing one of the biggest issues facing the NHS today: staff shortages. 74% want their organisation to invest more in new technological solutions and software to help attract new staff, and 83% think it can help to attract a younger workforce from digitally native generations.</span></p><p><span>Despite recognising the benefits digital technology can bring for healthcare services, the study also shines a light on some of the challenges to progress. The current standard of technology remains a source of stress for nearly half (49%) of NHS staff. They are under considerable pressure, and staffing levels and burnout (42%) are seen as the biggest barriers (outside of funding) to digital transformation. This is followed by cultural resistance to change (37%) and workforce availability and capability (37%). 75% feel that team capacity (e.g. lack of relevant skills and / or resources) is slowing innovation.</span></p><p><span><strong>Evolving infrastructure through collaboration</strong></span></p><p><span>While healthcare professionals say the approach to technology adoption needs to evolve, so too does the infrastructure required to support the latest innovation. However, fully connected, interoperable systems, which enable staff to seamlessly connect to apps and solutions are seemingly a little way off.</span></p><p><span>Nearly all respondents (98%) agree that network, Wi-Fi infrastructure and mobile technology are critical to future innovations in the delivery of healthcare, but 58% suffer from building not-spots (areas that receive little or no connectivity) and 51% have to switch between devices to carry out tasks. Consequently, 59% cite difficulties implementing new technology with existing systems and almost one in four (24%) have reverted to older processes due to connectivity issues.</span></p><p><span><strong>Professor Sultan Mahmud, BT’s Director of Healthcare, said: </strong>“It’s clear from this research that NHS staff have a real belief in technology and its potential for delivering greater healthcare for everyone. However, it’s also clear that we need to work together to evolve the approach to adoption and infrastructure. This is about making sure technology is a driver: easing staff stresses, supporting recruitment, unlocking digital transformation, and delivering better patient outcomes. The NHS needs partners that will stand alongside it shoulder-to-shoulder, and BT is proud to be on that journey.”</span></p><p><span>To support NHS Trusts with this ongoing challenge, BT has launched </span><a href="https://business.bt.com/public-sector/organisations/health/the-vanguard-innovation-programme/"><span>its Vanguard Programme</span></a><span>. The ‘clinically led, digitally enabled’ programme sees BT partner with NHS Trusts to co-create technology that is specifically developed for the challenges healthcare providers face. The programme focuses on the needs of patients, clinical staff, administrators, or the many others who are critical to delivering care.</span></p><p><span><strong>Dr Tim Ringrose, President, Digital Health, </strong></span><a href="https://www.rsm.ac.uk/"><span><strong>Royal Society of Medicine</strong></span></a><span><strong>, added:</strong> “The NHS finds itself under immense pressure and it needs partners that are able to really listen and co-create solutions that have a positive impact on workloads and patient experience. We can all see the potential technology can have, but right now it’s not always deployed in the right ways. The trials, being conducted at BT’s global R&D headquarters at Adastral Park, aim to provide a solution to one of the final challenges of mobile connectivity – getting coverage to the hardest to reach areas.</span></p><p><span>The project, which has received funding from Innovate UK, could offer transformational opportunities for sectors operating in remote areas such as transport, maritime security and search and rescue and could provide faster and more seamless connectivity direct to consumers mobile devices in remote areas.</span></p><p><span>In addition to extending the reach of existing UK network infrastructure, the HAPS solution could provide a fallback for terrestrial networks in the event of a disaster, supporting humanitarian aid or disaster relief. Furthermore, it has potential applications for remote monitoring across various industrial and agricultural use cases, improving efficiency of operation.</span></p><p><span>SPL’s antenna technology can provide uninterrupted 4G and 5G connectivity direct to consumer smart phones. The phased array antenna is capable of delivering faster speeds, in some cases up to 150Mbps across areas as wide as 140km or 15,000 square km (an area equivalent to the average footprint of 450 terrestrial masts), through 500 individually steerable beams.</span></p><p><span>In addition to the high performance, wide area connectivity, the HAPS solution is expected to provide significant cost and energy savings. The phased array antenna and the flight platform powered by hydrogen, provides sustainable 4G and 5G connectivity to large areas from the skies, removing the need for extending expensive terrestrial infrastructure in remote areas.</span></p><p><span>The first step in BT and SPL’s journey to the skies, is the development of a secure 5G HAPS communications demonstration system. SPL’s phased array antenna will be placed on a high building (simulating a high-altitude platform), to test its interaction with BT’s 5G secure architecture, connecting with its Open RAN testbed. This test will include supporting multiple user groups and different potential use cases, concurrently on the same network.</span></p><p style="text-align:justify;"><span>Tim Whitley, Managing Director Research and Network Strategy, BT Group said: “We’re delighted to be partnering with SPL to start realising the huge potential of HAPS aircraft to further strengthen our UK 4G and 5G network technology leadership. BT Group plc is listed on the London Stock Exchange.</span></p><p><span>For more information, visit </span><a href="https://www.bt.com/about"><span>www.bt.com/about</span></a></p>]]></pp:boilerplate><description><![CDATA[<p><span>Sheffield is the latest UK city to benefit from BT’s new digital street units, with the first four units unveiled, and more to follow across the city over the next few months.</span><br><br><span>The tech and telecoms firm has announced that four of its Street Hub 2.0 units have been launched enhancing the Steel City’s digital infrastructure in key city centre locations.</span></p><p><span>Street Hubs offer a range of benefits including free ultra-fast WiFI, free emergency calls and rapid device charging.</span></p><p><span>They also provide wayfinding information for tourists and have the capacity to be fitted with signal boosting 4G and 5G cells.</span></p><p><span>The first Street Hubs were switched on&nbsp; today at the sites in Arundel Gate, Brook Hill, Wicker and Bradfield Road, and form part of BT’s rollout of even better mobile and WiFi connections for communities across the UK.</span></p><p><span>As part of the initiative, BT will also be gifting free advertising to small businesses as they face increased costs during the current economic situation.</span></p><p><span>The company is donating up to £7.5 million of outdoor advertising space to small businesses across the UK as part of the rollout of the new digital units.</span></p><p><span>Michael Smy, Head of Street at BT, said: “Street Hubs bring improved and enhanced digital infrastructure and ensure that we are providing communities with the facilities that are fit for the future.</span></p><p><span>“As one of the biggest cities in the UK, Sheffield is the ideal location for these units which will benefit those living, working and visiting the city.&nbsp;</span></p><p><span>“Gifting free advertising to small businesses in the area also means we are able to play our part in supporting the city’s economy.”</span></p><p><span>One of the first businesses in the city to benefit from the free advertising space will be Harrison Cameras, based in London Road. The organisation won a competition to land the free advertising space which will be on display on hubs across the city.</span></p><p><span>Darren O’Brien of Harrison Cameras said: "We are a photographic retailer and our store has been a fixture on London Road for 50 years.</span></p><p><span>“We have become an important part of the community over that time and through support, sponsorships and charitable endeavours we aim to give back as much as we can.</span></p><p><span>“Winning this competition will give us a wonderful opportunity to re-engage with that community and reach a new generation of customers after a difficult couple of years."</span></p><p><span>BT is rolling out the Street Hub units across a range of major cities in the UK with Sheffield joining places like Birmingham, Nottingham, and Glasgow.</span></p><p><span>Earlier this year BT Group also announced plans to open a </span><a href="https://newsroom.bt.com/bt-group-announces-flagship-new-sheffield-office/"><span>flagship new office in the city</span></a><span> for up to 1,000 colleagues. The joint BT-Atos solution will improve security and monitoring for customers by enabling effective, real-time use of video and image data.</span></p><p style="text-align:justify;"><span>Digital Vision will use BT’s 5G/FTTx multi-access connectivity and edge computing. This ensures business customers receive a scalable, ready-to-deploy service with round-the-clock support and expertise.</span></p><p style="text-align:justify;"><span>The partnership comes after BT recently announced it was investing almost £100 million over the next three years in its ‘Division X’ unit to accelerate the development of customer solutions which integrate emerging technologies like 5G, IoT, Edge Compute, Cloud and AI.</span></p><p style="text-align:justify;"><span><strong>Marc Overton, Managing Director for Division X, part of BT’s Enterprise unit, said: “</strong>This partnership with Atos gives us access to the Computer Vision market for the first time, providing us the opportunity to play an even bigger role in the digital transformation of businesses around the world.</span></p><p style="text-align:justify;"><span>“Working together, we have been able to combine our skillsets to create an innovative platform that provides a host of potential use cases for facilities such as smart ports and transport hubs, to retail and fuel forecourts, to manufacturers.                         <guid>https://newsroom.bt.com/future-flight-how-bt-is-taking-to-the-skies/</guid><pp:caseid>521218</pp:caseid><description><![CDATA[<p><span><strong>By Dave Pankhurst, BT Director of Drones &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp;</strong></span></p><p><span>Excitement around drones has taken off as the media spotlight turned to Farnborough Air Show and the projects which have received the backing of the Government, thanks to major new funding via research agency UKRI and an ambitious vision for the UK’s future drone economy.</span></p><p><span>The project to capture headlines was undoubtedly Skyway – the world’s longest automated drone ‘superhighway’ that will connect the Midlands to the South East of England and cover a total of 165 miles.</span></p><p><span>Altitude Angel is leading the project, and BT is one of the key partners, along with several UK tech start-ups. We’re excited about Skyway’s potential because it will enable us to explore the many use cases for unmanned aerial vehicles (UAV’s) in a safe and responsible way and help us to develop the products and services that could have a transformative effect for the country.</span></p><p><span>A world where medical supplies are routinely delivered to NHS hospitals via drone, or roads and railways that can be inspected remotely without having to place people’s lives at risk, are just an example of what could be commonplace in the future thanks to this project.</span></p><p><span>Our EE mobile network, the largest and most reliable in the UK, will be the backbone for Skyway</span><i><span> </span></i><span>and I’m proud that we can bring expertise and knowledge from across the business to contribute to the partnership.</span></p><p><span>BT research has found that over two thirds (68%) of the British public believe drones will have a positive impact on their life in the future. But we can’t be complacent about public acceptance of drones. We want to prove that not only can we live safely alongside drones, but we also want to demonstrate the positive impact they can have on our economy – creating jobs and making businesses more efficient to relieve the pressure on escalating costs of living.&nbsp;</span></p><p><span>While Skyway is the biggest project we’re involved in, it’s by no means the only one. It’s also important to reference the other partnerships that have received the Government’s backing, and where BT has a key role.</span></p><p><span><strong>Atypical Airspace BVLOS (Beyond Visual Line of Sight) Solution (AABS)</strong> is a project led by sees.ai and uses its advanced drone system to allow safe and efficient drone flight in even the most complex and space constrained areas. They will be deploying the technology for critical national infrastructure in the first instance to demonstrate its safety to regulators and the Government.&nbsp;</span></p><p><span>BT’s team will support by providing mobile connectivity through our EE 4G and 5G network, enabling a data feed to go from the local environment through to the sees.ai control room. During the project we will also explore how satellite backhaul could be used to provide further resiliency for sees.ai.&nbsp;</span></p><p><span>The AABS project will help us understand more around the requirements organisations have for providing high bandwidth, low latency data feeds over our 4G and 5G network. This will play a critical role in the drones use case and its ability to operate safely. In the case of sees.ai’s solution, the data feed enables remote operators based in a control room to supervise drones on sites nationwide as they execute safe and efficient autonomous flight<u> </u>and data capture. In time this approach will enable a single remote operator to supervise multiple drones – and indeed in this project we are aiming to simultaneously fly two drones with one remote operator supervising.</span></p><p><span>Another exciting project where BT is adding expertise is <strong>InDepth </strong>where our Applied Research team based at Adastral Park in Suffolk - BT’s global R&D centre - will be working with the Association of British Ports (ABP), Kier and a number of start-ups to expand on some previous research and trials.</span></p><p><span>InDepth will involve the use of drones to carry out automatic BVLOS missions to monitor and control critical national infrastructure such as highways and ports.</span></p><p><span>For example, our Applied Research team will use technology to create a high-fidelity 3D digital twin of a port and use this to combine backend operational data with real-time data from drones to give a rich picture of current port operations. AI will be used to analyse the drone imagery in several use cases, including infrastructure inspection and management of assets, including vehicles.</span></p><p><span>These are exciting times for BT and the drone industry more widely. The government has recognised the potential of UAVs and its public backing and financial support for these projects will help us advance this technology.</span></p><p><span>However, for drones to have the kind of impact we know they can, we need the support of stakeholders across Government, devolved administrations and local government, and industry to safely modernise the UK’s legacy regulation and planning policies.&nbsp; After all, the EU, India, Switzerland, and U.S. are all moving at pace to ensure drones in their countries can take to the skies quickly.&nbsp; If the UK accelerates its efforts, there is still time to be a leader in the effective regulation of drones in a way that attracts more innovation, talent, and capital to our shores.</span></p><p><span>We are at the dawn of a new era. One that could help us revolutionise everything from how we receive deliveries to the advancement of smart cities, improved security, enhanced search and rescue capabilities and safer remote inspection of critical infrastructure. ]]></pp:boilerplate><description><![CDATA[<p><span><span><span><span><span><span>BT today announced the opening of a 5000+ sq. ft. robotics research facility at the BT Labs, Suffolk, which aims to place the UK at the forefront of a new era of robotics development for telecoms and civil engineering. The facility will play a key role in developing innovative robotics solutions to speed the deployment of essential infrastructure, working with the university sector and other utilities to trial a new range of UK-developed robotics which are applicable to telecoms and utility sector civil engineering challenges worldwide.</span></span></span></span></span></span></p><p><span><span><span><span><span><span>The lab is the first dedicated telecoms civil engineering robotics test facility in the UK, designed to help BT engage with the university sector and robotics startups as they develop robotic solutions to challenging civil engineering tasks. This includes addressing problems such as how to clear out blocked ducts, mend collapsed ducts and install new fibre network infrastructure without incurring the cost and delays that come with digging up roads and pavements.</span></span></span></span></span></span></p><p><span><span><span><span><span><span>New robotic locomotion and excavation techniques inspired by digging and burrowing mammals and insects, coupled with the latest technologies developed for space exploration, aerospace and medical applications are showing real promise for delivering so-called &lsquo;trenchless&rsquo; infrastructure deployment. Magnetic, climbing and cable-traversing robotic techniques are also maturing, enabling proof-of-concept trials on wireless tower and overhead cable poles.</span></span></span></span></span></span></p><p><span><span><span><span><span><span>It is expected that the test lab will play an important role in supporting BT&rsquo;s fibre programme, as well as facilitating collaboration with other utilities such as power and water companies as they roll out and update their underground and overhead networks.</span></span></span></span></span></span></p><p><span><span><span><span><span><span>The site is a unique indoor facility that will enable research teams to trial the latest innovations in robotics within a variety of test zones. The facility emulates three different types of environments in which testing can be carried out:</span></span></span></span></span></span></p><ul><li><span><span><span><span><strong><span><span>Underground environment:</span></span></strong> <span><span>The facility includes several test beds that can be filled with different soil and aggregate types to replicate the terrain that creates challenges for laying ducts and fibre across the country. The compaction, moisture content and stone content can all be controlled within these environments to test the ability of robots to dig pathways for ducts or direct-in-ground fibre. The test beds will also provide demanding environments for fibre sensing and robotics steering tests.</span></span></span></span></span></span></li></ul><ul><li><span><span><span><span><strong><span><span>In-duct environments:</span></span></strong> <span><span>Pipe stands are used at the facility to construct duct runs, using specially manufactured transparent versions of BT ducts. This enables replication of the scenarios whereby a duct collapses or becomes blocked with silt build up.</span></span> </span></span></span></span></li></ul><ul><li><span><span><span><span><strong><span><span>Overhead environments:</span></span></strong> <span><span>The facility holds a full height telegraph pole, with platform access to allow different pole-top fixtures to be fitted. This creates opportunities to test robots that can lift tools, equipment or cable to the top of a pole. Cables can be run to another pole to provide a single 35m span for development of cable-car-like devices for pulling in new cables or dealing with tree canopies that could damage an existing cable. A series of shorter posts provides a &lsquo;pole-transit&rsquo; testbed for developing other cable-travelling devices.</span></span></span></span></span></span></li></ul><p><span><span><span><span><span><span>Professor Tim Whitley, BT&rsquo;s MD of Research, said: &ldquo;The UK is a hotbed of civil engineering innovation, with a thriving university ecosystem and an enviable robotics startup sector. The Centre will have state of the art specialist laboratories in AI, Data Science, Network Security and Cyber range and will make Suffolk a recognised destination for industry-focused ICT and Digital Creative study programmes and an internationally recognised destination for continuous professional development in digital technologies. The brand-new network will connect sites in London&rsquo;s Docklands, the City and the M4 Corridor, and will provide data services secured using Quantum Key Distribution (QKD) and Post-Quantum Cryptography (PQC).</span></span></span></span></span></span></p><p style="text-align:justify"><span><span><span><span><span><span>The new network, which is the world&rsquo;s first commercial trial of a quantum network infrastructure, will be operated by BT, who will provide a range of quantum-secured services including dedicated high bandwidth end-to-end encrypted links, delivered over Openreach&rsquo;s Optical Spectrum Access Filter Connect (OSA FC) solution for private fibre networks. The QKD links will be provided using a quantum network that includes both core and access components, and will be integrated into BT&rsquo;s existing network management operations. Toshiba will provide quantum key distribution hardware and key management software.</span></span></span></span></span></span></p><p style="text-align:justify"><span><span><span><span><span><span>The pace of progress in Quantum computers presents an increasing risk to standard encrypted key exchanges, authentication and digital signatures; some estimates suggest that quantum computer enabled security attacks are possible within 5 years, and likely to occur within 10 years. Securing encrypted traffic is a pressing problem today, because data which requires long term security could be at risk of &lsquo;store today, crack later&rsquo; attacks, in which the key exchange and encrypted traffic are stored now and broken when a sufficiently powerful quantum computer is available. QKD-based security is unique because the key-exchange is secure against any computational or mathematical advance, therefore it is immune to any present or future attacks by quantum computers.</span></span></span></span></span></span></p><p style="text-align:justify"><span><span><span><span><span><span>While BT and Toshiba have previously installed a point-to-point quantum-secure link between two commercial sites, deploying a full quantum-secured metro network environment with multiple endpoints requires new approaches to integration and management. Building on the BT and Toshiba point-to-point solution for the Bristol-based NCC (National Composites Centre) and Centre for Modelling and Simulation (CFMS), this new network will extend the solution to serve multiple customers across a wide metropolitan area. London is an ideal environment to deploy and trial this technology thanks to the density of customers whose data is extremely sensitive and requires utmost security, such as financial and legal institutions. The two companies&rsquo; initial focus will be to provide trials for enterprise customers who are carrying sensitive traffic (such as database backups) between sites, and to explore potential future offerings such as encrypted links and &ldquo;quantum keys-as-a-service&rdquo;.</span></span></span></span></span></span></p><p style="text-align:justify"><span><span><span><span><span><span>Toshiba launched commercial products for QKD, manufactured at its Cambridge site, in the latter half of 2020. These offer the highest key rates (1,000&rsquo;s of keys per second) and longest range of any commercially available fibre QKD system. Toshiba&rsquo;s innovative multiplexing compatibility allows the data and the quantum keys to be transmitted on the same fibre, eliminating the need for costly dedicated infrastructure for key distribution. Toshiba will also supply network key delivery and management software that enables end-to-end protection of data across the network.</span></span></span></span></span></span></p><p style="text-align:justify"><span><span><span><span><span><span><strong>Howard Watson, CTO of BT,</strong> said: &ldquo;BT and Toshiba have established a global lead in the development of quantum-secure networks. Last year BT conducted customer trials with NCC of QKD over 10G Ethernet.</span></span></span></span></span></span></p><p><span><span><span>As well as collaborating with BT last year on the installation of the UK&rsquo;s first industrial quantum-secured network, which transmits data between the NCC and CFMS, Toshiba has achieved numerous milestones through its extensive research into quantum technology at its Cambridge Research Laboratory. It allows football fans to predict on-pitch events, earning points in the process and competing against friends. It includes a fantasy trading element, where fans can collect and own unique digital cards of their favourite football players. The cards can increase in value, depending on the player&rsquo;s real-life performances and correct predictions from the owner of the card. As the winner of Innovate 21, AriSports will now have the opportunity to work with BT Sport to develop its technology for future use.</span></span></span></p><p style="text-align:justify"><span><span><span>This is the third time BT Sport has backed a search for new viewer innovations in recent years from small businesses. Since winning a 2018 BT competition, Sceenic worked with BT Sport to support last year&rsquo;s launch of Watch Together service on the BT Sport App. Meanwhile, the winner of a 2016 BT competition, Seenit, enabled fans to send in video reports from stadia around the country as part of BT Sport&rsquo;s Premier League Tonight show.</span></span></span></p><p style="text-align:justify"><span><span><span>AriSports was one of four companies to make it to a final where it presented its innovation to a panel of experts led by Jamie Hindhaugh, chief operating officer, BT Sport. ]]></pp:boilerplate><description><![CDATA[<p><span><span><span><span><span><span>Today BT announced that it has achieved a new milestone in the development of quantum-secure communications by conducting the world&rsquo;s first trial of Quantum Key Distribution (QKD), a method of ultra-secure communications, over hollow core fibre cable, from Southampton University spin out, Lumenisity<sup>&reg;</sup> Limited.<br /><br />This summer, BT kicked off trials of a new type of optical fibre &ndash; Nested Anti-Resonant Nodeless Fibre (NANF) hollow core fibre &ndash; at the BT Labs in Ipswich to test the potential benefits of deploying this technology for a variety of scenarios, including secure communications. The trials used cable developed and manufactured by Lumenisity to address the need for high-speed transactions and bandwidth increases in advanced communications systems, which has also been used for applications such as Data Centre Interconnects (DCIs), Edge and 5G xHaul.<br /><br />In the latest trial, BT researchers successfully operated a state-of-the-art QKD system* using commercial equipment over a 6-kilometre-long Lumenisity CoreSmart<sup>&reg;</sup> cable with a hollow, air-filled centre, revealing potential benefits such as reduced latency and no appreciable crosstalk &ndash; the effect of a transmitted signal interfering with the transmission of another signal.<br /><br />In most optical fibre communications, high-speed signals are sent over a solid piece of glass using different wavelengths of light to deliver high capacity transmissions. In QKD systems, quantum light is transmitted on a single photon channel, traditionally necessitating use of a separate fibre, due to &lsquo;crosstalk&rsquo; an effect that causes the light from high-speed data channels to spread their wavelengths, interfering with a quantum signal carried over the same fibre, as the change in frequency can cause channels of light to leak into other channels. The effect is similar to having a whispered conversation next to an orchestra &ndash; it can be hard to hear the other person&rsquo;s voice over the music.<br /><br />Hollow core fibre doesn&rsquo;t have internal material &ndash; it&rsquo;s filled with only air &ndash; so there is less light scattering and less crosstalk between channels, even at a single photon level. This clearer separation &ndash; similar to a wall between the two speakers and the orchestra - makes it easier to deliver both a high-speed encrypted data stream, and the faint quantum signal that carries the encryption key, over the same fibre.<br /><br />Lumenisity&rsquo;s cable also demonstrated further benefits for the deployment of QKD, as commercial telecommunications equipment will not need to be optimised in order to send a data-encrypted key. This is critically important because the equipment can be used normally without modifications, an issue that creates added complications for sending secure signals over standard fibre.<br /><br />Professor Andrew Lord, BT&rsquo;s Head of Optical Network Research, said: &ldquo;This is an exciting milestone for BT, accelerating the UK&rsquo;s lead in quantum technologies that will play an important role in future communications systems globally. We&rsquo;ve proven a range of benefits that can be realised by deploying hollow core fibre for quantum-secure communication.                         <title>Trusting the Data: a People’s View of Responsible Technology</title>

From retail, leisure, health and community services having to close their doors and shift their operations online to the proliferation of trace-and-track apps, questions around what responsible technology looks like have become more important than ever before.</span></span></span></p><p><span><span><span>Clearly technology has been of incalculable value during the pandemic, as our dependency on tech has grown, so too have our concerns over how tech is used and the need to protect individual rights while working towards the public good. We all need to know what responsible technology looks like and how we can best serve our stakeholders. How can new technologies be designed to protect and promote individual rights while also working for public good? What oversight and governance are needed to guard against abuses?</span></span></span></p><p><span><span><span>BT&rsquo;s new Responsible Tech strategy has been created to help shape our development of tech-driven solutions. It&rsquo;s the embodiment of our purpose to connect for good &ndash; by empowering people and improving their lives &ndash; while making sure we are always accountable, fair and open. Our goal is simple: to be the most trusted connecter of people, devices and machines.</span></span></span>&nbsp;</p><p><span><span><span>Working with the cross-party think-tank and research organisation Demos, we recently conducted a national conversation about responsible technology, asking the public what&nbsp;<i>they</i>&nbsp;think in key areas such as surveillance, data monetisation and healthcare.</span></span></span>&nbsp;</p><p><span><span><span>A nationally representative sample of more than 1,000 adults took part in the survey which was conducted on Polis, an online deliberation platform that encourages people to participate in discussions, rather than simply responding. The nature of a Polis survey means those taking part can submit their own statements, taken from their lived experiences, as well as vote on a set of pre-determined statements.</span></span></span>&nbsp;</p><p><span><span><span>Polis also uses a technique which highlights opinions shared amongst all participants. This allows people to see areas of consensus even when some of their attitudes are very different.</span></span></span>&nbsp;</p><p><span><span><span>The results were fascinating. Perhaps predictably, a large group are concerned about the risks of new tech and uses of data, but there were also many areas of agreement, even with those who are nonchalant about these risks. The need for better education for children about data uses, the need for technology to be made accessible to all, and support for government oversight of how companies are using people&rsquo;s data are all likely areas of agreement and provide a framework on which further debate about uses of technology can be built.</span></span></span>&nbsp;</p><p><span><span><span>None of the groups in the survey &ndash; the &ldquo;concerned&rdquo;, the &ldquo;conflicted&rdquo; and the &ldquo;nonchalant&rdquo; &ndash; were whole-heartedly supportive of technological progress without caveats and controls. Those who most strongly believe that new uses of data and tech can work for the public good still don&rsquo;t believe that technology providers can be trusted to use it properly, while those who aren&rsquo;t actively worried about their data still have concerns over some of the ways in which it is used.</span></span></span>&nbsp;</p><p><span><span><span>What became clear is that we face a crisis in trust on both sides.</span> On the one hand people don&rsquo;t trust how their data is used but on the other hand they also feel they are not being trusted to make their own decisions about how they use data. T<span>he need to build trust &ndash; and improve people&rsquo;s understanding about data use and new technologies &ndash; is vital.</span></span></span>&nbsp;</p><p><span><span><span>So how do we go forward? With systems which are already fundamentally mistrusted, half-baked add-ons &ndash; such as cookie consent forms on websites &ndash; are merely an irritant and fail to stop widespread collection of personal data. For genuine change, we need approaches to technology and data usage that are not just imposed on people and then signed off with a mere tick.</span></span></span></p><p><span><span><span>What is needed is meaningful co-design and collaboration, with the development of new technologies and uses of data shaped by a wide range of people with different needs and experiences. ]]></pp:boilerplate><description><![CDATA[<p><span><span><span><span><span><span>BT announced today that it has kicked off trials of a new type of optical fibre - hollow core fibre - at the BT Labs in Adastral Park, Ipswich, in a collaborative project with Lumenisity, a Southampton University spin out company, and Open Radio Access Network (O-RAN) mobile vendor Mavenir.</span></span></span></span></span></span></p><p><span><span><span><span><span><span>BT researchers are conducting the trials at BT&rsquo;s research and engineering campus, using a 10-kilometre-long hollow core fibre cable provided by Lumenisity; this new type of network cable has a hollow, air filled centre that runs the entire length of the cable. It will be used to test a variety of use cases, including potential benefits for 5G networks and ultra-secure communications, like Quantum Key Distribution (QKD).</span></span></span></span></span></span></p><p><span><span><span><span><span><span>Networks across the world currently run on single-mode optical fibre, pioneered at Adastral Park, which consists of solid strands of glass. The glass in these cables quickly carries information over long distances by channelling light from laser transmitters through the glass strands. However, the nature of glass means that this light travels marginally slower inside the fibre than it would in air. Research into hollow core fibre presents an opportunity to explore how the capabilities of optical fibre can be enhanced in future, with the potential to reduce the latency, or signal delay, caused by the light travelling through glass, by up to 50%. This new fibre has an air-filled central core, with an outer ring of glass, to guide the laser beam whilst maintaining the signal speed at very close to the ultimate speed of light.</span></span></span></span></span></span></p><p><span><span><span><span><span><span>The reduction in the delay of the light provided by hollow core fibre would enable a variety of benefits, from high-frequency trading to lowering mobile network costs. Working with Mavenir, BT has shown that using hollow core fibre can increase the distance between street antennas and the back-end processing in exchanges. Due to the low latencies, use of hollow core in the Radio Access Network (RAN) could potentially reduce mobile network costs by allowing more 5G antennas to be served from one exchange or cabinet. </span></span></span></span></span></span></p><p><span><span><span><span><span><span><strong>Professor Andrew Lord, BT&rsquo;s Head of Optical Network Research, said:</strong> &ldquo;We&rsquo;re excited to begin trialling hollow core fibre and to discover the potential opportunities and benefits of deploying this technology in certain scenarios.                         <title>TechWomen: Closing the Gap in Tech</title>

Now, I&rsquo;m one of the only women Chief IT Architects in the FTSE 100.</span></span></span></p><p><span><span><span>The technology sector has taken some big strides to foster a diverse environment, but we still have a way to go. Being the only teenage girl in a room with boys all around is intimidating. In my A level computing class, I was never confident enough to put my hand up even when I knew the answer. My A-level teacher believed in me and pushed me to believe in myself. She encouraged me to answer questions. She was my first advocate. It&rsquo;s critical, now more than ever, that we actively support the next generation of technology leaders and empower them.</span></span></span></p><p><span><span><span>I didn&rsquo;t know what enterprise architecture was growing up; no one ever asks you if you&rsquo;ve thought about becoming an Enterprise or IT architect. We&rsquo;re like city planners and building architects for the business world. Our challenge is to unravel and create new structures within the business to support and reimagine digital ways for people to use and interact with our services. By modernising BT&rsquo;s IT application landscape, I help to ensure that BT can provide services to customers faster. That means that my work will help customers to find, buy and use our products in an easier, and more online way, than what they do today. It&rsquo;s all about creating amazing digital experiences for our customers. And it&rsquo;s where business and technology meet. </span></span></span></p><p><span><span><span>The role of an enterprise architect is about seeing the bigger picture, seeking tangible outcomes and translating them into innovative designs and roadmaps. Following my strengths led me to this role. But I couldn&rsquo;t have done it without confidence in my abilities and a great support network throughout my whole career, even now.</span></span></span></p><p><span><span><span>My experience highlights just how critical it is to support women who are early on in their technical careers. I&rsquo;m proud to play a role in BT&rsquo;s TechWomen programme, our development programme to support career progression for women across the company. Each year, we take 400-450 women at manager and senior manager level and invest in giving them the tools they need to progress their careers. However, the point of TechWomen, and any development programme of a similar nature, is that someday the programme won&rsquo;t be needed anymore. In that ideal future, women will naturally be progressing into high level tech roles and feel empowered in their careers. Equality is the goal.</span></span></span></p><p><span><span><span>BT&rsquo;s TechWomen programme makes an active effort to change the status quo in technology companies. The programme started 5 years ago because we noticed that talented women were reaching a certain stage and not progressing; not for a lack of skills but because they lacked confidence. Because of this lack of confidence, women frequently miss out on career progression opportunities compared to their male counterparts. And I&rsquo;m not just talking about women who do technical roles. We all face the same challenges. That&rsquo;s why our programme is designed for all women at BT, regardless of their job title or remit, with the goal of creating an inclusive environment where they can thrive alongside their male colleagues.</span></span></span></p><p><span><span><span>The programme, which started out as casual sessions, has progressed into a full development programme run by professionals from outside BT. Over the course of the one-year programme, women participate in a variety of modules that cover personal brand, agile ways of working and more. We&rsquo;ve had a learning curve due to coronavirus, as we&rsquo;ve needed to evolve the way we deliver the programme. And this has helped us to flex to meet different learning styles by providing extra resources that can be tapped into anytime. As a result, TechWomen is continuing to give women at BT the tools they need to be confident, solve problems and progress their careers. By the end of this year, over 2,000 women at BT will have benefitted from the programme and this number is set to grow as the programme continues to expand and evolve.</span></span></span></p><p><span><span><span>I&rsquo;m very proud of the progress we&rsquo;re making in creating a pipeline of women who are ready to take on more senior roles in BT and the wider industry &ndash; helping to create the next generation of technology leaders. Last year, 95% of the women who completed the course felt confident that they possessed the tools to drive their career. It&rsquo;s my hope that because of TechWomen, and other similar programmes, we&rsquo;ll start to see far more women in senior roles across the technology sector and release their untapped potential. We all have a role to play in enabling this; whether it&rsquo;s by building up someone&rsquo;s courage and capability or by removing barriers.</span></span></span></p><p><span><span><span>Whether you&rsquo;re an A level student or an IT Architect, it takes a lot of confidence to walk into a room where you&rsquo;re the only woman. But once you take that first step, you&rsquo;ll encounter many advocates and networks that want to support you. ]]></pp:boilerplate><description><![CDATA[<p><span><span><span>BT has joined forces with high-tech Cambridge spin-out Nu-Quantum, other UK start-ups, Research and Technology Organisations (RTOs) and university partners, as part of a world-first trial of end-to-end quantum-secured communications for 5G and connected cars.</span></span></span></p><p><span><span><span><span>The AIRQKD trial combines BT&rsquo;s globally leading expertise in building quantum-secure networks using QKD (Quantum Key Distribution &ndash; an essentially un-hackable, cutting edge technique for sharing encryption &lsquo;keys&rsquo; between locations using a stream of single photons) with other new techniques for applying quantum security to mobile devices, developed by UK start-ups Nu Quantum, Angoka and Duality.</span></span></span></span></p><p><span><span><span><span>The trial, which will run for 36 months, is funded with &pound;7.7M by the Quantum Technologies Challenge, led by UK Research and Innovation. It will for the first time combine Quantum Key Distribution over fixed fibre and free-space networks (point-to-point laser connections between cell sites), with quantum-enhanced security chips in mobile devices.</span></span></span></span></p><p><span><span><span><span>In combination, these technologies will be used to deliver an ultra-secure link between connected 5G towers and mobile devices, as well as to connected cars, in conjunction with the Warwick Manufacturing Group at Warwick University.</span></span></span></span></p><p><span><span><span>The new trial builds upon BT&rsquo;s current fibre-based testbed for QKD, which runs between Cambridge and the BT Labs at Adastral Park, Suffolk. It will pave the way for the development of a wide range of quantum-secured use-cases, for applications where ultra-security of data transfer is especially important.</span></span></span></p><p><span><span><span>Cambridge-based Nu Quantum, one of the UK&rsquo;s newest quantum technology start-ups, will be the provider of quantum components: small modules capable of manipulating the faintest light signals (single photons of light) to generate and communicate absolutely secure quantum encryption keys.</span></span></span></p><p><span><span><span>Other partners include Belfast-based Angoka, Bristol&rsquo;s Duality Quantum Photonics and London-based Arqit; all cutting-edge start-ups specialising in the new field of Quantum tech, in which the UK is increasingly seen as taking an early lead.</span></span></span></p><p><span><span><span>Professor Andrew Lord, BT&rsquo;s head of optical network research, said: &ldquo;The UK has firmly established itself as a global leader in quantum-based network security. With the AIRQKD trial, we&rsquo;re delighted to be taking this to the next level and combining multiple quantum technologies from innovative UK start-ups to build the world&rsquo;s most secure fixed-mobile communications link. Connected cars are only one of the possible range of applications that will benefit from such ultra-secure connectivity in the future.&rdquo;</span></span></span></p><p><span><span><span>Dr Carmen Palacios Berraquero, co-founder and CEO of Nu Quantum said: &ldquo;In this project, we are basically creating the architecture for a whole new quantum-telecommunication industry, with a supply chain running from component manufacture through to end user. At Nu Quantum we have the unique ability to use the smallest packets of light, making the most of quantum mechanics and the security advantage it can give us.                         <title>Reshaping our networks for the future</title>

In January this year the UK government announced proposals to limit use of Huawei to 35% of future fixed and radio access networks and exclude them from the core of the network.</span></span></span></p>

<p><span><span><span>These proposals were revised in July to encompass a complete removal of Huawei equipment from the UK&rsquo;s 5G networks by 2027.</span></span></span></p>

<p><span><span><span>This proposed legislation clearly has an impact on all operators in the UK market. It would be easy to focus purely on the challenges presented by that decision.</span></span></span></p>

<p><span><span><span>But it&rsquo;s also a powerful opportunity. A chance to reframe and reshape our networks for the future; to build the fast, flexible, stable and secure connectivity our customers want, and the country needs.</span></span></span></p>

<p><span><span><span>I&rsquo;ve been hugely impressed by the positive, forward looking attitude of our network and procurement teams as they&rsquo;ve stepped up to address that opportunity.</span></span></span></p>

<p><span><span><span>In the nine months since the initial decision, we&rsquo;ve signed significant new deals with two of the world&rsquo;s leading equipment vendors, Nokia and Ericsson, that will enable us not only to meet our commitments to the UK government, but to continue building out our award-winning 5G network across the UK and to consolidate our leading position in mobile.</span></span></span></p>

<p><span><span><span>Two deals may not sound like a lot, but the scale and complexities involved mean that getting these agreed in just nine months is a real testament to the hard work of hundreds of people across the business.</span></span></span></p>

<p><span><span><span>But it&rsquo;s only the start.</span></span></span></p>

<p><span><span><span>Since March, with the advent and impact of Covid-19, BT&rsquo;s networks have played a central, crucial role in the UK&rsquo;s ability to function as a society. We&rsquo;ve kept tens of millions connected to their loved ones, to emergency services and local community support, to their jobs and schools.</span></span></span></p>

<p><span><span><span>Our networks have never experienced greater demand. Daytime traffic on our core network more than doubled over the course of this year, with millions of people working from home, entertaining and educating their families, and relying on us to deliver the connectivity they need, day in, day out.</span></span></span></p>

<p><span><span><span>The performance of our networks in the face of these pressures has been incredible, but our ability to scale to meet the challenges of Covid-19 hasn&rsquo;t been a fluke, or down to luck.</span></span></span></p>

<p><span><span><span>In the past five years, BT has invested, consistently, in building one of the world&rsquo;s leading networks. Through the acquisition of EE, our investments in 5G and full fibre, our leading public Wifi coverage, and our cutting edge, highly scalable, software-defined core, we&rsquo;ve been laying the foundations to deliver a truly 21<sup>st</sup> century connectivity platform for our customers, from consumers to global multinationals. We&rsquo;re already a leader in many of the things that matter most to our customers &ndash; speed, reliability and security. But we&rsquo;re not resting on our laurels.</span></span></span></p>

<p><span><span><span>There&rsquo;s still lots of work to do. We&rsquo;re building like fury to extend full fibre broadband and mobile coverage as widely as possible, including the rapid early deployment of 5G across 112 towns and cities, but those are multi-year programmes, as is our commitment to closing down our legacy network infrastructure, and moving to IP voice and data networks.</span></span></span></p>

<p><span><span><span>We have already laid the groundwork for one of the most modern, secure and capable communications infrastructures, not only in the UK, but globally. A benchmark against which other networks will be measured, a powerful differentiator for us as a business, and a powerful force for the UK&rsquo;s post-Brexit economy and recovery from Covid-19. I'm looking forward to the next chapter.</span></span></span></p>

]]></pp:boilerplate><description><![CDATA[<p align="center"><span><span><em>The 6km network uses Quantum Key Distribution (QKD) to ensure ultra-secure data transmission between the National Composites Centre (NCC) and the Centre for Modelling and Simulation (CFMS) in Bristol</em></span></span></p><p><span><span><strong>1<sup>st</sup> October 2020, London:</strong> BT and Toshiba Europe Limited today announce the UK&rsquo;s first industrial deployment of a quantum-secure network, transmitting between the National Composites Centre (NCC), the UK&rsquo;s world-leading composite research and development facility, and the Centre for Modelling & Simulation (CFMS), a not-for-profit research organisation that pioneers new digital engineering capabilities.</span></span></p><p><span><span>Funded by Innovate UK&rsquo;s <a href="https://gtr.ukri.org/projects?ref=104615">AQuaSeC</a> project, the network demonstrates how Quantum Key Distribution (QKD) &ndash; an essentially un-hackable, cutting edge technique for sharing encryption &lsquo;keys&rsquo; between locations using a stream of single photons &ndash; can be used to secure data traffic between key industrial sites where security is of paramount importance.</span></span></p><p><span><span>The technology solution is being used to replace a &lsquo;manual&rsquo; approach of physically transporting sensitive data on portable storage devices between the NCC and CFMS sites in Emerson&rsquo;s Green and Filton in North Bristol, as well as at the University of Bristol, thereby saving time and enhancing the security of critical data. Instead of physically transmitting the data, it is now transferred at high-speed over 6km of fibre optic cable, along which the encryption keys are also transmitted as a stream of single &lsquo;encoded&rsquo; photons.</span></span></p><p><span><span>Using standard Openreach fibre, Toshiba&rsquo;s QKD system enables the distribution of 1000s of cryptographic keys per second. Its innovative multiplexing compatibility allows the data and the quantum keys to be transmitted on the same fibre, eliminating the need for costly dedicated infrastructure for key distribution. While this first deployment covers a range of 6km, the current maximum range extends up to 120km &ndash; allowing ultra-secure data transmission across major metropolitan environments.</span></span></p><p><span><span>The network also benefits from Toshiba&rsquo;s Active Stabilisation technology, which allows the system to distribute key material continuously, in even the most challenging operating conditions, without any user intervention. This avoids the need for recalibration of the system due to temperature-induced changes in the fibre lengths.</span></span></p><p><span><span>&ldquo;This first industrial deployment of a quantum-secure network in the UK is a significant milestone as we move towards a quantum-ready economy. While today&rsquo;s announcement marks the first UK deployment of QKD, Toshiba has multiple Proofs of Concept (PoCs) currently in operation globally &ndash; these include sites within the US and Japan, working within highly sensitive areas such as healthcare and financial services. <p><span><span><span><span><span><span><span>Dorothy (14), Sonia (14) and Justine (14) created the &lsquo;Dimming Dyslexia&rsquo; app</span></span></span></span></span> <span><span>to analyse online text and other educational resources, translating them into formats that are easier to understand for those with dyslexia. The app can present written text into videos, cartoons, alter font size and colours on the page, presenting more</span></span> <span>dyslexic-friendly formats.</span></span></span></p>

<p><span><span><span>This project has been inspired by the team witnessing how some pupils were perhaps struggling with some basic skills, such as reading and writing. Consequently, the team got together to find a way to help others improve their everyday skills, skills the team admit sometimes they take for granted.</span></span></span></p>

<p><span><span><span><span>Dimming Dyslexia&rsquo;s innovative design and team ambition makes it a potentially game changing tool for the 1.3 million people in education with dyslexia<a href="#_ftn1"><span><span><span><span><span>[1]</span></span></span></span></span></a>. <span><span><span><span>As winners of this year&rsquo;s BT Young Pioneer award, they will receive the support of BT experts who will work with the team to take this from prototype to a fully working app. In addition, they will receive &pound;10,000 to fund the project so they can take it to the next level.</span></span></span></span></span></span></span></span></p>

<p><span><span><span><span>Not only is watching a long line of vehicles creeping along at a snail&rsquo;s pace incredibly boring, but it can also add hours to your working day.</span></span></span></span></p>

<p><span><span><span><span>I, like many others, have been working from home during the pandemic and one unexpected benefit during the Covid-19 lockdown period was how quiet our major roads were. But with more people in the UK expected to continue to work from home in the longer period, will the traditional rush hour ever return to what it was before?!</span></span></span></span></p>

<p><span><span><span><span>During the pandemic our data experts have been supporting engineering consultancy Atkins on some interesting research carried out on the North of England&rsquo;s road network.</span></span></span></span></p>

<p><span><span><span><span>We have supplied Atkins with anonymised mobile network data so they can learn how traffic patterns have changed along nearly 5,000 miles of key roads in the region since March. They hope to gain insights into what to expect for the future of our roads.</span></span></span></span></p>

<p><span><span><span><span>The aggregated and anonymised network usage data provided by BT between March and June, covered road usage on major highways such as the M1, M6 and A1. And a new report by Atkins, following the research, has found that the &lsquo;new normal&rsquo; post Covid-19, could have a transformative effect on our major roads.</span></span></span></span></p>

<p><span><span><span><span>The reduced geographical spread of journey origins could be a good indicator for the effect remote working could have on road usage. With many people who used to travel further distances for work now likely to spend at least some time working from home, Atkins believes traffic on key roads in and out of towns and cities will become more localised.</span></span></span></span></p>

<p><span><span><span><span>But it doesn&rsquo;t stop with home working, as the increased flexibility to work schedules with people rarely now working the traditional 9-5 could help reduce the usual peak-time traffic levels. However, these benefits are likely to vary across local and strategic roads.</span></span></span></span></p>

<p><span><span><span><span>The research found that changes to road usage have been more profound than simply a reduction in traffic volumes, as there has also been a major shift in the type of journeys and the reasons for making them.</span></span></span></span></p>

<p><span><span><span><span>The report also singled out the Manchester area as being one where the road network may still be particularly congested at peak times post Covid-19, in comparison to other areas in the North of England. This is because the research indicates that many commuters using Manchester&rsquo;s key roads work in jobs that they cannot carry out remotely.</span></span></span></span></p>

<p><span><span><span><span>Atkins and BT will continue to process the data required to analyse the UK&rsquo;s road usage, both in the short and longer-term.</span></span></span></span></p>

<p><span><span><span><span>The Covid-19 pandemic has had a huge impact on all our lives, and some of the new ways of working and living could well become permanent. So, perhaps the days of queuing for long periods in traffic each day will become a distant memory - only time will tell.</span></span></span></span></p>

]]></pp:summary><description><![CDATA[<p><span><span><span><span>As we work together across the UK to overcome the Covid-19 pandemic, it&rsquo;s sobering to take a moment to reflect on just how big an impact the crisis has had on both our home and working lives.</span></span></span></span></p>

<p><span><span><span><span>BT Group has seen a significant rise in demand on both our fixed and mobile networks, as people stayed at home during the lockdown and millions of people migrated towards working from home. To give some context, in the last week of April alone, BT&rsquo;s</span> <span>core network transmitted 103.3 Petabytes of data in a single day - the largest total since our records began. When you consider that one Petabyte is the equivalent of 13 years of HD video, you&rsquo;ll really appreciate how much data we&rsquo;ve all been consuming.</span></span></span></span></p>

<p><span><span><span><span>Our networks have stood up well to this challenge and have been extremely resilient, but the predicament we all find ourselves in has prompted questions about what the &lsquo;new normal&rsquo; might look like when we emerge from this pandemic.</span></span></span></span></p>

<p><span><span><span><span>As part of the longer-term economic recovery it&rsquo;s important that we collectively engage to explore how digital technologies and innovation can help, both in terms of the actions we need to put in place now, plus the steps we need to take to maximise the potential of technology and deliver a more resilient, green, thriving economy fit for the future.</span></span></span></span></p>

<p><span><span><span><span>A recent survey by BT Skills for Tomorrow and Small Business Britain found that more businesses are increasingly moving services online for survival. Two fifths (42 per cent) of small businesses have moved online due to the pandemic; and over a third (39 per cent) now view digital skills and tools as a key focus area.</span></span></span></span></p>

<p>Over a <span><span><span><span><span>third (39 per cent) of small businesses have drastically cut operational costs, with the need for physical offices and other traditional ways of working now increasingly being re-thought.</span></span></span></span></span></p>

<p><span><span><span><span><span>Looking to the future, 37 per cent are planning for less face to face contact and around a quarter expect working from home to continue.</span></span></span></span></span></p>

<p><span><span><span><span>Covid-19 has had an unprecedented impact on businesses, society and economy and is likely to significantly accelerate the shift to digital and the pace of the Fourth Industrial Revolution. From virtual meetings to automated factories, online orders to drone delivery, digital services are growing in importance, permeating an increasing number of sectors and activities.</span></span></span></span></p>

<p><span><span><span><span>Digitally agile firms are adapting to the ongoing crisis more successfully, and others are rapidly upskilling in response to challenges to their business models.</span></span></span></span></p>

<p><span><span><span><span><span>The Covid-19 pandemic has undoubtedly seen many businesses change their business models to adapt to the current situation, which could have a beneficial impact on recovery. However, this will not be the case for all and it&rsquo;s vital that government continues to support and deliver policies to support digital transformation and skills by SMEs.</span></span></span></span></span></p>

<p><span><span><span><span><span>Even before the pandemic the UK was facing an alarming digital skills gap, which has only been exacerbated by this crisis.</span></span> <span>Millions of people and a significant number of businesses lack the essential digital skills they need, which risks widening social divides and already has an estimated &pound;63bn annual impact on the UK&rsquo;s competitiveness.</span></span></span></span></p>

<p><span>Through our Skills for Tomorrow programme we will</span> <span>help 10m people, families and businesses across the UK get the skills they need by 2025. But the task ahead is significant and will require intervention from multiple sectors, organisations and institutions to ensure the skills gap is bridged.</span></p>

<p><span>The Covid-19 pandemic will have an accelerating impact on the widespread adoption of digital technologies including</span> <span><span>IoT, artificial intelligence (AI),</span></span> <span>5G</span> <span><span>and full fibre broadband. Left unchecked, this has the potential to further widen socio-economic inequality, with those underequipped to exploit the new technology being placed at a disadvantage, particularly within the world of work and in accessing public services.</span></span></p>

<p><span><span><span><span><span>AI technologies will represent the biggest shake-up in a lifetime to the labour market. This will present two high-level priorities for business and policymakers: retraining for people in jobs which will be displaced; and education and skills development for the jobs of the future.</span></span></span></span></span></p>

<p><span><span><span><span><span>The key challenge is how we can work together through and beyond the Covid-19 crisis to create a more productive economy, tackle climate change and build a healthy and more equal society.</span></span></span></span></span></p>

BT Group plc is listed on the London stock exchange.</span></p><p><i><span>For more information, visit</span> </i><a href="http://www.btplc.com/"><i><span>www.btplc.com</span></i></a></p>]]></pp:boilerplate><description><![CDATA[<p><span>BT’s Adastral Park is co-ordinating a major effort to create thousands of protective visors for frontline health and social care workers in the East of England every week during the coronavirus pandemic.</span></p><p><span>The company’s research and innovation hub, near Ipswich, is working with local schools, universities and 3D printing firms to supply organisations, including the East Suffolk and North Essex NHS Foundation Trust (ESNEFT), with the vital protective equipment.</span></p><p><span><strong>Lisa Perkins, BT Adastral Park research and realisation director, </strong>said they developed a prototype of the widely approved PRUSA visor using a 3D printer, after hearing about the difficulties the NHS was facing in securing enough PPE.</span></p><p><span>She said: “It started off as a small request enquiring if we had any 3D printers which then grew to us taking on the whole co-ordination of producing these visors across the region.</span></p><p><span>“It’s not just ESNEFT this is limited to either, as we’re also supplying local GP and even care homes who have approached us.”</span></p><p><span>Ms Perkins said a prototype of the visor was shown to officials at Ipswich Hospital who were so impressed that they asked if production could be ramped up immediately.</span></p><p><span>She added: “We’ve set up a production line at Adastral Park and delivered our first visors to Ipswich Hospital on 9 April. They told us they would be put to use in the intensive care unit immediately and it’s incredible to think it’s already making a difference.</span></p><p><span>“We’re working with so many great partners on this project including</span> <span>Stealth Mounts, Farlingaye High School and University of Suffolk, as well as Connectix Cabling Systems, Ipswich Makerspace, Kemtron and Stour Valley School.</span> <span>Huge numbers of individuals are also contributing using their personal 3D printers and supplies, and non-manufacturing businesses are also contributing. We’ve only just started but the plan is to soon be producing around 3,000 visors a week.”</span></p><p><span>The visors cover the face and are based on two approved designs. They are also made of acetate which means they can be disinfected and potentially re-used.</span></p><p><span>Ms Perkins said they had also been overwhelmed by the generosity of the local community and businesses in donating materials towards the effort.</span></p><p><span>“I’d like to say a big thank you to those who have responded to our plea to help do this,” she said.</span></p><p><span>“We’ve been blown away by the amazing response we’ve had.&nbsp;We’ve got an army of people 3D printing the frames, we’ve had large donations of acetate and elastic and people have offered to collect and deliver materials.”</span></p><p><span>Ipswich Hospital is co-ordinating distribution of the visors throughout Trust sites including Aldeburgh, Clacton, Halstead, Harwich and Felixstowe community hospitals and Bluebird Lodge, near Ipswich.</span></p><p><span><strong>Dr Angela Tillett, Chief Medical Officer at East Suffolk and North Essex NHS Foundation Trust (ESNEFT) which runs Colchester and Ipswich hospitals, said: </strong>“We are hugely grateful to everyone in the community who is offering their support and making donations like this possible.</span></p><p><span>“This very large and regular supply of full-face visors is making a real difference and allowing our teams to continue the fight against Coronavirus (COVID-19) at ESNEFT safely.</span></p><p><span>“We would like to say a big thank you to everyone at BT for their kindness and hard work.”</span></p><p><span>In addition to supporting the NHS with the protective visors, BT’s Adastral Park also has an Emergency Response Team who are playing their part. The team receive specialist training and have a fully equipped ambulance. Since the weekend they have</span>&nbsp;<span>been supporting the East of England Ambulance Service on emergency call outs.</span></p><p><span>Ms Perkins said BT had also received requests from other health and social care providers and also Suffolk Police to supply them with visors.</span></p><p><span>She added: “We know the demand is huge and we will help out as much as possible.                         <guid>https://newsroom.bt.com/the-facts-about-our-network-and-coronavirus/</guid><pp:caseid>382469</pp:caseid><description><![CDATA[<p>As stronger restrictions around COVID-19 begin to take effect, and many of us contemplate a future of working from home for an extended period, the resilience and capability of our networks takes on an even greater importance. No-one is more aware of that than me, and my network engineering teams at BT.</p>

<p>Over the last few days, I&rsquo;ve seen a flurry of media stories reflecting an understandable concern that our networks will be unable to cope with the additional traffic of millions of home-workers.</p>

<p>I&rsquo;d like to share a few facts that might help to address some of these concerns:</p>

<ul>
<li>
<p><span>The UK is one of the world&rsquo;s most advanced digital economies, so we overbuild our networks to compensate for our love of high-definition streaming content, video gaming and other bandwidth-hungry applications. In contrast, online conferencing services, even video-calls, consume far less bandwidth.</span></p>
</li>
<li>
<p><span>The UK&rsquo;s fixed broadband network core is built (with a lot of &lsquo;headroom&rsquo;) to support the &lsquo;evening peak&rsquo; of network traffic, driven by these high-bandwidth applications. The highest peak we&rsquo;ve seen in evening traffic was 17.5Tb/s, driven by videogame updates and streaming football.</span></p>
</li>
<li>
<p><span>In contrast, daytime usage, during working hours, generally runs at about 5 Tb/s.</span></p>
</li>
<li>
<p><span>Since Tuesday this week, as people started to work from home more extensively, we&rsquo;ve seen weekday daytime traffic increase 35-60% compared with similar days on the fixed network, peaking at 7.5Tb/s.</span></p>
</li>
<li>
<p><span>This is still only around half the average evening peak, and nowhere near the 17.5 Tb/s we have proved the network can handle.</span></p>
</li>
</ul>

<p>These facts give us confidence that the additional load on the broadband network is well within manageable limits and we have plenty of headroom for it to grow still further.</p>

<p>But we&rsquo;re not complacent. We&rsquo;re monitoring the network closely, and collaborating with the other UK networks and content companies. Our Network Operations Centre teams are operating around the clock to identify any issues and resolve them as rapidly as possible. And if more capacity is needed, our engineers are on standby 24/7 to make that happen.</p>

<p>Because we&rsquo;re monitoring the network so closely, we&rsquo;re noticing a few changes to usage patterns as a result of COVID-19 that I&rsquo;d like to share:</p>

<ul>
<li>
<p>We&rsquo;re actually seeing a 5% decrease in mobile data traffic, as a lot of people are connecting their mobiles to their home WiFi, rather than using the cellular network.</p>
</li>
<li>
<p>Data usage is peaking at around 5PM, the time of the Prime Minister&rsquo;s daily briefing.</p>
</li>
<li>
<p>Mobile traffic is becoming more evenly distributed across the country, as people travel into urban hubs less frequently.</p>
</li>
<li>
<p>Roaming traffic is falling by about 10% per day, with a 55% drop over the last 5 days.</p>
</li>
<li>
<p>We are seeing an increase in mobile voice call volumes, which is to be expected. This is well within the levels the network is built to handle, but we would encourage customers to use the landline or IP voice services like Skype as well, especially for long conference calls.</p>
</li>
<li>
<p>Organisations are also seeing increased numbers of connections into their corporate Virtual Private Networks (VPNs) and conferencing services. This may mean that companies need to think about how they optimise use of these private networks, or increase their provision of such services.</p>
</li>
</ul>

<p>In conclusion, the COVID-19 outbreak is causing changes to the way our networks are being used. At BT, we&rsquo;re monitoring those changes carefully to make sure we can respond rapidly if needed. However the UK&rsquo;s communications infrastructure is well within its capacity limits, and has significant headroom for growth in demand. Our networks have never played a more critical role, and I couldn&rsquo;t be more proud of the hard work my teams are putting in to keep the country online during this difficult time.</p>

<p>BT today announced a range of great new flexible TV packages designed to offer the UK access to the widest choice of the very best TV shows, films and sport available.</p>

<p>The new 24-month flexible TV packages will be launched on 21 February together with a pick of additional content to help customers choose the right TV line-up that best suits their needs. With package prices starting at just &pound;10 a month, customers have the flexibility to upgrade, downgrade, and add content to enable their TV to adapt to changing lifestyles month-to-month.</p>

]]></pp:boilerplate><description><![CDATA[<p>A new digital skills training centre for the East of England was today visited by The Princess Royal at BT&rsquo;s Adastral Park research and engineering campus in Suffolk.</p>

<p>The DigiTech Centre, a collaboration between the University of Suffolk and BT, with funding from the New Anglia Local Enterprise Partnership (LEP), will provide training in cutting-edge digital skills for people looking to pursue careers in the nationally-important information and communications technology (ICT) sector, as well as fuelling high tech businesses who increasingly require access to a talented technology workforce. The centre will form part of the growing &lsquo;Innovation Martlesham&rsquo; technology cluster at Adastral Park, home of the globally-recognised BT Labs and a further 130 companies.</p>

<p>The DigiTech centre will be based in remodelled and modernised buildings at Adastral Park, and become home to the ICT and Digital Creative courses offered by the University of Suffolk. In addition, it will offer a range of new innovative research and training programmes in emerging technology areas such as:</p>

<p>Adastral Park is BT's global Research and Development centre and was opened by Her Majesty The Queen in 1975. It has played a pivotal role in telecommunications research, such as the commercialisation of single-mode optical fibre, and the recent development of the world&rsquo;s first quantum networks. The park is home to around 3,000 BT employees, and around 1,000 employees from other companies. Each year there are around 60,000 visitors to the site, with around 1,100 of them being leaders from global business or government. Adastral Park&rsquo;s schools outreach programme also inspires around 8,000 school children a year about the possibilities afforded by technology. <p>Today, BT announces it has selected Canonical&rsquo;s Charmed OpenStack on Ubuntu as a key component of its next generation 5G Core. Canonical, the company behind&nbsp;<a href="https://www.ubuntu.com/" rel="nofollow">Ubuntu</a>, will provide the open source virtual infrastructure manager (VIM) as part of BT&rsquo;s Network Function Virtualisation (NFV) program, and the transition to a cloud-based Core network.</p>

<p>This open source cloud-based approach will ensure that BT can quickly deploy new services, and increase capacity to stay ahead of customer demand driven by 5G and FTTP. Canonical&rsquo;s OpenStack architecture will also facilitate the delivery of BT&rsquo;s full 5G Core network.</p>

<p><a href="https://ubuntu.com/openstack" rel="nofollow">Openstack</a>&nbsp;cloud software will enable the separation of network hardware and software, turning Core network components into software applications, meaning they can be updated faster with continuous integration and development. This separation allows different network applications to share the same hardware across data centres, making the network more resilient and scalable when additional capacity is needed. The speed at which software can be updated compared to replacing core network equipment will lead to a new way of working for the development of 5G services where BT can build new services in weeks and deploy in days.</p>

<p>Neil J. McRae, BT Group Chief Architect, said: &ldquo;Canonical is providing us with the &lsquo;cloud-native&rsquo; foundation that enables us to create a smart and fully converged network. Utilising open source and best-of-breed technologies will ensure we can deliver on our convergence vision, and enable a world-leading 5G and FTTP experience for our customers.&rdquo;</p>

<p>BT&rsquo;s EE mobile network switched on 5G in six launch cities on Thursday 30th May 2019. Customers and businesses inLondon, Birmingham, Cardiff, Manchester, Edinburgh and Belfast are the first places in the UK to experience the benefits of 5G. BT has also outlined its 5G roadmap, which will see the cloud-based full 5G Core introduced from 2022.</p>

<p>The higher bandwidth and lower latency, coupled with expansive and growing 5G coverage, will deliver a more responsive network, enabling truly immersive mobile augmented reality, real-time health monitoring, and mobile cloud gaming. The full 5G Core is also a vital step on BT&rsquo;s convergence of network technologies, bringing together fixed, mobile and WiFi into one seamless customer experience.</p>

<p>Further developments, able to be introduced with more agility thanks to the cloud-based architecture, will introduce Ultra-Reliable Low Latency Communications (URLLC), Network Slicing and multi-gigabit-per-second speeds. This phase of 5G will enable critical applications like real-time traffic management of fleets of autonomous vehicles, massive sensor networks with millions of devices measuring air quality across the entire country, and the &lsquo;tactile internet&rsquo;, where a sense of touch can be added to remote real-time interactions.</p>

Data is then available via BT’s data hub for analysis by a group of researchers and scientists, led by the University of Birmingham, to help monitor air pollution in the area.</p><p>InLinkUK from BT is a state-of-the-art digital “hub” that replaces traditional payphones on the streets of Birmingham and across the UK. The InLink units provide a range of free digital services to the local community including free ultrafast Wi-Fi, free phone calls, free mobile device charging, community news and easy access to the emergency services.</p><p>Utilising the InLinks for air quality monitoring avoids the need for additional street clutter, with the Wi-Fi providing a reliable way to transmit the information in real time. </p><p>The data provided by the InLinks will complement results from other air quality monitoring equipment used in the WM-Air – West Midlands Air Quality Improvement Programme. </p><p>Air pollution in the West Midlands affects around 2.8 million people, reducing life expectancy by up to six months and costing the economy up to £860 million a year, according to recent reports.</p><p>Professor William Bloss, of the University of Birmingham, leads the WM-Air project.</p><p>He said: “There is a pressing need for more detailed measurements across cities such as Birmingham to deliver clean air science. It’s important for us to understand the levels of air pollution in the city as it can have a huge impact on the health and wellbeing of people who live and work here.</p><p>“We are exploring use of the new BT sensors alongside a number of initiatives we already have in place to measure air pollution and improve air quality.”</p><p>Neil Scoresby, General Manager Payphones and InLinkUK at BT, said the company was excited to be supporting initiatives to measure air pollution in Birmingham.</p><p>“By collecting air quality data at multiple points and more often, it is possible for WM-Air to gain a much better understanding of air pollution in real time via the BT data hub.</p><p>“This is a great example of how BT is working with communities in cities like Birmingham to explore how the IoT capability of the InLinks can support a range of smart city initiatives.”</p><p>Birmingham, along with Bradford, are the first cities in the UK to use the air quality monitoring via the InLinks. <p>The new BT India Research Centre (BTIRC) will join BT&rsquo;s network of collaborative research facilities around the globe, including centres in Northern Ireland, China, the US, and the UAE. This global innovation network is centred on the BT Labs at Adastral Park, Suffolk, UK, one of the world&rsquo;s leading centres for telecommunications research.</p>

<p>The BTIRC will operate multiple research tracks, focused primarily on artificial intelligence, mobility and software engineering technologies for use in BT&rsquo;s strategic programmes, products and services. Future areas will include cybersecurity innovations. BT is one of the global research leaders in communications technologies and AI, filing the highest number of AI-focused patents amongst all UK companies with the UK patent office over the last 20 years.</p>

<p>The centre will build on these strong credentials, following a well-established model used for the company&rsquo;s other global research locations, combining academic, industry and government partnerships and BT&rsquo;s own commercial and research expertise.</p>

Attendees will have the chance to network, learn about open roles and explore the additional community activities Adastral Park has to offer.</p>

<p>Today the UK celebrated a milestone in the development of ultra-secure quantum networks with the opening of the world&rsquo;s first commercial-grade quantum test network link between the BT Labs in Suffolk and the Cambridge node of the UK&rsquo;s new Quantum Network.</p>

<p>The advent of quantum computing will offer huge increases in computing power and capabilities, but in the wrong hands it could also be used to render many of our security encryption measures obsolete. In order to both provide and secure future communications, government and industry are working collaboratively on a range of new technologies, including Quantum Key Distribution (QKD).</p>

<p>The new high-speed link will enable testing and demonstration of new quantum technologies. This will include trials of how these technologies can be used to secure critical and sensitive data across vertical industry sectors such as healthcare, banking, defence and logistics.</p>

<p>The link forms part of the UK Quantum Network (UKQN) being built by the Quantum Communications Hub, a collaboration between research and industry, supported by the UK&rsquo;s National Quantum Technologies Programme. The new connection stretches from BT&rsquo;s Adastral Park research campus near Ipswich in the East of England, to Cambridge. The wider UKQN network then extends onward over the National Dark Fibre Infrastructure Service to Bristol in the South-West.</p>

<p>The quantum-secured link directly connects not only the research facilities of the BT Labs and the University of Cambridge, but also the high-tech industry clusters at each end: the Cambridge Science Park and Innovation Martlesham near Ipswich. This opens the door to a huge range of trial projects focused on quantum secure network technologies and services with potential for exploitation by industry.</p>

<p>The link uses over 125km of standard BT optical fibre between Cambridge and Adastral Park, with BT Exchanges acting as &lsquo;trusted nodes&rsquo; along the route. The link will carry both quantum and non-quantum traffic; the QKD technique shares data encryption keys via an ultra-secure quantum channel over the same fibre that carries the encrypted data itself.</p>

<p>The network was built by the core partners of the Quantum Communications Hub &ndash; BT, and the universities of Cambridge and York. Support for the development was provided by ID Quantique and ADVA, who supplied the QKD systems and optical transmission equipment, and the system-specific expertise required to integrate it.</p>

<p>Intended to stimulate and support the commercial exploitation of quantum research by UK industry, UKQNtel is a clear embodiment of the collaboration between research and industry that is central to the UK&rsquo;s National Quantum Technologies Programme. The link is co-funded through the Quantum Communications Hub by the Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council and BT, and built by academic and research partners.</p>
