Superfast South Yorkshire is urging people to sign up to fibre broadband – to help them find love with some high-speed dating.

According to recent research[1], by 2031 people will be more likely to meet a partner a partner online than offline – with just over half of relationships starting on the web. Around 38 per cent of us will be meeting the love of our lives via an online dating or matchmaking service.

And with more than 480,000 homes and businesses in South Yorkshire now able to access fibre broadband speeds – getting online in a bid to find your perfect partner has now got even easier.

To help celebrate Valentine’s Day the Superfast South Yorkshire team played cupid to prove that love can blossom in the unlikeliest of places – even next to a shiny new green fibre cabinet in Barnsley.

Natalie Ward, programme manager for Superfast South Yorkshire, commented: “In the rapidly evolving digital world that we now live in – there are few areas of modern life which are not touched somehow by broadband connectivity.

“Just as superfast broadband can be a game-changer for businesses and other aspects of our daily lives so it can also be true for more the more social aspects – like finding the perfect partner.”

Tom Keeney, BT’s regional director for Yorkshire and Humber, added: “The online world really does touch virtually all aspects of our daily lives and high-speed broadband is essential to making this work for us.

“People should also remember that superfast does not mean expensive. In fact, fibre broadband prices are comparable with those of standard broadband. Fibre is an ‘opt in’ service which means you must contact a service provider of your choice to upgrade and with a wide range operating across the UK it is a great time to find a deal to suit you.”

More than 480,000 households and businesses across South Yorkshire can now access high-speed fibre broadband as a result of Superfast South Yorkshire and BT’s own commercial fibre broadband programme.

All of the engineering work is being carried out by Openreach, BT’s local network business, and as the network is open it provides residents and businesses with access to fibre broadband via a wide range of internet service providers, offering the benefit of competitive pricing and products.

Superfast South Yorkshire was formed in September 2014 as local authorities joined forces with BT in a £22 million deal to extend the availability of high-speed, fibre broadband. A further £4.8 million in additional funding has been secured which will extend the reach of fibre broadband to 99 per cent of South Yorkshire. The project is jointly funded by Sheffield City Region LEP, the Government’s Broadband Delivery UK (BDUK) fund and BT.
